'ADL Report: White Supremacist Murders More Than Doubled in 2017'

The number of white supremacist murders in the United States more than doubled in 2017 compared to the previous year, far surpassing murders committed by domestic Islamic extremists and making 2017 the fifth deadliest year on record for extremist violence since 1970.

In its annual assessment of extremist-related killings, the Anti-Defamation League’s Center on Extremism found white supremacists and other far-right extremists were responsible for 59 percent of all extremist-related fatalities in the U.S. in 2017, up dramatically from 20 percent in 2016.

White supremacists were directly responsible for 18 of the total 34 extremist-related murders in 2017, according to the new ADL report, Murder and Extremism in the United States in 2017. A total of nine deaths were linked to Islamic extremists.

The most recent ADL data shows that over the last decade a total of 71 percent of all fatalities have been linked to domestic right-wing extremists, while 26 percent of the killings were committed by Islamic extremists. The other 3 percent of deaths were carried out by extremists not falling into either category.

18 divided by 34 is 52.9%, not 59%.

Of course only 26% of such killings are linked to Islamic extremists (who, by the way, are often far right in ideology anyway - conservative religious extremists). There aren't that many Muslims in the US, so the bulk of such killings are by the groups that exist here.

Anyway, some of the listed 2017 incidents were not motivated by any political ideology, so they are including some with personal motives. It's not really a right-wing or left-wing terrorist incident if someone murders someone over jealousy or some other non-ideological motive. There is even a murder in a prison break by a member of a "white supremacist" prison gang, but the motive was not ideological, it was escape, and if we included all prison murders across the country for 2017 (which they did not do), most of them are committed by those "linked" to prison gangs of one stripe or another (most of which are racist, like Mexican gangs, black gangs, white gangs - they divide by race). They include "white" gangs, but they don't include murders by other racist gangs, like black gangs, Italian mobster crime families and the like.

I think it paints a rather skewed picture - not that any of the listed crimes are worthy of being defended, and white supremacist gangs are really ridiculous and hateful and worthy of opposition, IMO. But to say that this list is complete or representative seems to me to be obviously incorrect.

If we're going to be pedantic about maths, 18 divided by 34 is approximately 0.529, but I understand what you're saying. I purposely made sure that in the quoted portion of the article is a link to the report, in case anyone was willing to read it. In the 2nd chapter the 59% figure is clarified.

There isn't any list of extremist murders for the year 2017 in the ADL article that I quoted. There is a list in the report, but it doesn't appear that you read it.

The report distinguishes between ideologically motivated killings vs non-ideologically motivated, though it recognizes that the distinction can be cloudy. However it does count murders committed by extremists for apparently personal reasons. The report explains that it it the product of an ongoing ADL project to record killings by 'perpetrators associated with domestic extremist movements.' It also acknowledges that it cannot be considered to have presented the full extent of extremist killings in the US in 2017.

'TWP chief Matthew Heimbach arrested for battery after affair with top spokesman's wife'

Matthew Heimbach, the leader of the Traditionalist Worker Party, is free on bond after being charged with battery in southern Indiana after a bizarre sequence of events involving Heimbach having an affair with his chief spokesman’s wife.

Police in Paoli, Indiana, said Heimbach attacked his wife and TWP spokesman Matt Parrott early Tuesday morning after the two confronted him about the affair with Parrott’s wife.

After the arrest, Parrott announced he was walking away from the group.

“I’m done. I’m out,” Parrott told the Southern Poverty Law Center on Tuesday. “SPLC has won. Matt Parrott is out of the game. Y’all have a nice life.”

Parrott declined to comment further on Heimbach’s arrest or his resignation. His resignation came hours after the arrest and just days after he learned of the affair between Heimbach and his wife.

Heimbach, 26, posted $1,000 bond and was released Tuesday. He did not answer calls to his cellphone and did not return questions sent by text message from the Southern Poverty Law Center.

After police arrived, the responding officer overheard a verbal confrontation between Heimbach and his wife, followed by a “scuffle,” the report states. Heimbach’s wife said her husband kicked a wall, grabbed her face “and threw me with the hand on my face onto the bed.” Police said the step-daughter recorded the attack on her cellphone.

In the report, all four people involved in the incident recorded their occupations as “White Nationalist.”

Matthew Heimbach, founder of the TWP, is facing felony charges of assault. The Southern Poverty Law Center’s Hatewatch blog reported yesterday that Heimbach attacked his wife and her step-father, TWP spokesman Matt Parrott, after they confronted him over his affair with his mother-in-law, Parrott’s wife. Yes, that’s right: Heimbach was sleeping with his wife’s mother, according to the police report. ...

This isn’t Heimbach’s first alleged act of violence against women, but it could be the act that ends TWP. TWP was always mostly Heimbach and Parrott, who doubled as the group’s webmaster; since Heimbach’s arrest, Parrott deleted TWP’s website and membership rolls. While Heimbach could try to re-invent himself as a white nationalist leader, it will be difficult: He was already engaged in power struggles with other alt-right figures.

Unlike Richard Spencer, Heimbach based his ideology at least in part on his reliogisity; he joined a heretical Russian Orthodox sect after the Orthodox church excommunicated him for his white supremacist beliefs. So much for traditional family values.
