Back in the day, I rode to school too, and did lots of unsupervised playing at weekends, including swimming in the local river. Part of the reason that this happens less these days is that there is simply a lot more traffic around, I suspect...

Chances of a snatching are almost nil. As are the chances of a school shooting, but it's frowned upon to say that. There are approximately 56,000,000 school kids in the U.S., 17 didn't make it home on February 14th. That doesn't excuse anything (and I don't have a dog in this fight), it's just a fact. Your kid's chance of not getting home safely that day (disregarding other events) is about 1:3,300,000. For reference, the odds of pulling a royal flush in 5 card stud are 1:650,000. I've never pulled a royal flush, but I did hit a natural full house once, kings over threes.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

I think that is a disgracefully complacent attitude to take whether you have a 'dog in the fight' or not. Shame on you.

The Marshall County High School shooting occurred at Marshall County High School in Benton, Kentucky,[a] on January 23, 2018. As students were gathering in an open area prior to the start of classes, a 15-year-old student opened fire with a handgun, killing one 15-year-old at the scene, and wounding another who died at a nearby hospital. Eighteen other people were injured, fourteen by bullets and three critically.

Doesn't change the fact that we're reacting hysterically to a situation that has less chance of happening to any given child than being struck by lightning. dying in a car wreck, being murdered by their own parents, being killed by a meteorite, dying from flesh eating bacteria, or killed by a bear.

I'm NOT saying that there is ANY acceptable number of dead kids, only that people need to rationally look at the situation before pulling their kids out of school, moving out of the country, or any number of other idiotic things people are threatening to do.

Lak, every student at a school where one of these shootings would be traumatised - and that isn't just "snowflake stuff", the trauma would be real, with friends injured and dying.

Given that, the chances of being in a school where a shooting occurs are not minuscule at all; I would not be surprised if many, many high school students across America have nightmares and anxiety about going to school...

It's not just kids in school that are being killed. They are just the saddest aspect of your ridiculous gun culture.

The gun zealots are being far more irrational than the people who are sick of seeing dead kids on TV. If the gun zealots were more rational about guns, and were willing to agree to some reasonable gun laws, I'm sure the people who are fed up with the monthly gun massacres wouldn't be so "hysterical".

The plump red one says she's very pro 2nd amendment and loves guns, and didn't think the gun laws needed to be changed until she was covered in blood at the Las Vegas massacre. This is the standard conservative m.o.—no fucks given until it affects them personally.

Absolutely. They clearly have an empathy deficit (as if this was needed in addition to all the other evidence). It's why I think conservatism is a mental disorder that is antithetical to a civilised society.

Changing gun laws? Not very likely. Here's what actually happens after a mass shooting in the US:

'Gun Stocks Rise Again In Aftermath of Florida School Shooting'
Another mass shooting, another boost for gun stocks.

...

American Outdoor Brands Corporation (AOBC, -4.33%), the maker of Smith & Wesson guns, saw its share price rise by 5.6%. Sturm, Ruger & Company (RGR, -5.53%) was up 2.8%, ammunition and rifle-scope firm Vista Outdoor (VSTO, -1.42%) was up 2.8%, and ammunition maker Olin (OLN, -3.02%) was up 1.4%.

This has become a familiar sight in the aftermath of mass shootings, with likely reasons including the anticipation of more people buying guns to defend themselves, and the possibility that buyers might fear an impending crackdown on gun ownership, leading them to buy new firearms sooner rather than later.
