Re: The Anne Frank Train
Are these a new type of ICE's? Or just more of the same?

It's the ICE 4 generation of trains. This will be the first ICE with bike carriages.

The Brits must be very jealous. Delivered on time and in budget.

Apparently the NS (Dutch Railways) will be running it from Amsterdam to Rome. That will give the airlines a run for their money.

The Beethoven Train will be deafeningly loud.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Non-stop to just outside of Moscow.

And, a train goes to Volgograd, but once there, you can't leave.

Our local rail transit system is run by the Dutch state, as it happens. We're supposed to be getting some excellent new trains up here but - surprise surprise - the staff have been striking, because the new trains won't require guards.Scot Dutchy wrote:Well done.NineBerry wrote:It's the ICE 4 generation of trains. The local bus company (owned by the German state) has also been on strike recently too. It's been chaos.
Sooner we replace all these shirkers with robots, the better.

Nothing says enjoyable travel than 17+ hours on train, especially if you book the cheap overnight berth and share the trip with five strangers whose culture does not value daily showers/baths. I'm sure that it will really give those $200 easyjet flights, in 2 1/2 hours, a run for their money. My only regret would be not being able to take a bus instead.Scot Dutchy wrote:Apparently the NS (Dutch Railways) will be running it from Amsterdam to Rome. The future, folks, is self-driving cars. Trains are so 19th and 20th century. Once we're all zipping around in robotic pods, nobody will want to bother with trains. The traffic will be controlled, and cheap travel will be available by robotic buses on the roadways. And, there is even going to be an "uber" type subscription service, where, instead of owning a car, you just pay monthly to call a car when you need it, and a pod will drive up and take you wherever.

Re: The Anne Frank Train
I remember travelling from Paris to southern Spain to cross the straits of Gibraltar to get to Morocco on that particular 'hippie trail' way back. The journey was a long one - maybe 12 hours - and the further south we went and the more north Africans we picked up, the hotter it became, the smellier the train became, the more disgusting the toilets - to he point where I would not use them.
I seem to remember having a litre and a half of very cheapo red wine with me, which helped somewhat.

The Dutch version would come with free nosegays.
