Tory MPs prefer Tuscany, Provance, Panama, and their country estates as holiday destinations. :)

I think it's official 'scrutiny' rather than general review which was being referenced here.

It's the reality of the modern media cycle. And people's short attention span.

Another underhanded trick is to slip odious policies through parliament on a day everybody is occupied with other matters. So, the 9th of September 2001 would have presented a great opportunity to cut $5 billion off the public transport budget and use that amount to subsidise the construction of a privately owned tollway.

Indeed, that was a good day to bury bad news.

Now that Mrs May has returned from her holiday and publicly declared that she's determined to lead the Tory Party into the next election, you'll not be surprised to hear that the Tories are doing a lot of quiet shuffling about to organise the drama-free coronation of her replacement. On the list are...
  • Ruth 'The Noo' Davidson
  • David 'The Brexit Bulldog' Davis
  • Phil 'The Spreadsheet' Hammond
  • Amber 'Yummy Mummy' Rudd
  • Jacob 'The Alien' Rees-Mogg
  • Dominic 'Eat the Poor' Raab
If these folks are the answer, what on Earth is the question?

Bloody Welsh git.

It should be: Jacob 'The Skull' Rees-Mogg

He always reminds me of Hume.

Rees-Mogg is like some made up parody of what a Tory from 1920 should look and talk like. I'd quite like to see the little oik win but he won't. Though I was wrong about Brexit and Trump so ignore me.

Rees-Mogg is a genuinely scary prospect. Like Boris he plays up the posh slightly buffoonish character and covers it all in tradition and politeness - it's the sort of thing that could be seen as decent and respectable. But you look closer at his views and it's the most hideous right-wing reactionary social conservative coupled with neoliberal privatising wealth and power centralising authoritarianism.

I'd be happier to continue with the incompetent floundering government we have with May than see the horrors that a government lead by that arch-Tory in tweed clothing could bring.
[Disclaimer - if this is comes across like I think I know what I'm talking about, I want to make it clear that I don't. I'm just trying to get my thoughts down]

I'm slightly nervous about the title of this thread now.
Although, if they run this parliament to the end, that's seven years. But who could predict that we would vote to come out of Europe, and come that close to electing Corbyn?

Corbyn is keeping his head right down, and just popping up now and again, to say something innocuous.
Brilliant !
And the press are giving him a pretty much free run.
They need the Corbyn story to run and run. It's good for circulation.
And Labour are neck and neck in the polls. It's working. Mind you, calling an election you didn't win isn't good for the personal ratings.

I have no idea who could lead the Tories. David Davies is the least obnoxious, but he's already branded a loser, when it comes to leadership. Maybe it's long enough ago to allow him another go.

I see that the Tories are kick-starting their own version of Momentum, called Activate. Polls show that 55% of under 30's favour Labour over the Tories, so they've an uphill battle with that demographic - hence Activate. They haven't had a great start...
The only thing the Conservatives' youth campaign has activated is utter hilarity

.... Their Momentum equivalent, “Activate”, is aimed at 18-25 year olds, and claims that its purpose is to whip up enthusiasm for centre-right politics. It’s safe to say that the launch has not been as successful as the Tories would have hoped. Many have said that Activate sounds like a cut-price painkiller that promises a full recovery but actually does very little – a fitting tribute to Theresa May’s time in office so far.

Not only that, but despite claiming it to be an “independent grassroots campaign”, it’s pretty evident by looking at the People section of their website that it’s merely a handful of Conservative students being told what to do by a few old-hands from local party machines. How liberating!

They do deserve a bit of credit, though. It’s already caught the attention of plenty of young people. It just so happens that the vast majority of those who are engaging with it are doing so simply to mock it. The only thing it’s activated thus far is an abundance of people letting them know what a cringe-worthy attempt at getting “down with the kids” this really is.

The thing the Conservatives seem to forget is that they can’t change their in-office record of anti-youth policies with a meme or two. If they really cared about the youth vote, they wouldn’t have persisted with such damaging policies over the last seven years.

They implemented a staggering rise in tuition fees, scrapped housing benefits for 18-21 year olds, cut the Education Maintenance Allowance and reduced funding for vital mental health services. It’s clear that they’re only beginning to perk up now because they’re on the ropes....

The unofficial 'independent' conservative youth movement have called themselves Moggmentum. No, they really have.

The whole thing is based on a false premise, that young people will keep their loyalty to the left.

It doesn't happen. People grow up. And hopefully move to the centre.

Mrs May was going to talk to the European Parliament, but she didn't want it to be a public address because we don't need to know what she wants to talk about - like the Goldman-Sachs thing all over again. Instead she's now going to make 'an important intervention' in Florence. Probably going to ask for political asylum or something.

Anyway, Jacob 'The Preacher Man' Rees-Mogg thinks that the ever-increasing numbers of people dependent on food banks is "rather uplifting", and it's only a shame that the previous Labour government didn't tell more people about their existence. Food banks - another Tory success story.

You couldn't make it up - and if you did people would call you a liar.
