WTF? Are we still pretending there's such a thing as the "alt left" when it was specifically pointed out no such thing exists?

There are those that believe themselves to be on the left of the political spectrum, but are not part of the mainstream leftist movement.

I choose to call them Alt-left.

It matters because the Alt Right are a specific group with shared values. Saying there's an "alt left" creates a false equivalence. It is a phrase deliberately made up by the Alt Right and the term seems to include disparate groups such as Black Lives Matter and ISIS. Don't play into their hands.

Actually, the "alt right" is not really a specific group either. It's a collection of disparate group of differing values, any one of which is largely irrelevant and miniscule, and taken together are still largely insignificant. Wikipedia has them as a "loosely defined" group who reject mainstream conservatism in favor of white nationalism. Since the number of people who support "white nationalism" is about as small in number as those that support "black nationalism", it should be understood that alt right white nationalists are an irrelevancy. The attention they get in the media is ridiculous.

I don't think I've ever called anyone "alt left" or referred to any group by that name.

I prefer to call them the Assclown Left. If you're taking over a northern, liberal college campus and demanding that professors be fired because they didn't want to honor a demand to leave campus because of their skin color... you may be a member of the Assclown Left. If you think that it's justified to attack and threaten speakers and conference goers because you don't like their politics, you might be a member of the Assclown Left. If you think that we in the United States, Canada, Oz/NZ and western Europe, live in homophobic, transphobic, misogynistic, racist patriarchal capitalist societies, built to oppress everyone but "fucking white males" then you might be a member of the Assclown Left. If you think college administrators should concern themselves with Halloween costumes and whether college students drink tequila and wear sombreros on Cinco de Mayo, you might be a member of the Assclown Left. If you think freedom of speech is a racist, white supremacist concept, you might be a member of the Assclown Left.

Compared to university righties, they are far more influential and relevant. The university lefties, the Assclown Left at universities, are actually achieving their goals. They are succeeding in getting college administrations to give them safe spaces, deplatform speakers, require sensitivity training for microaggressions, police Halloween costumes, police and shut down private clubs, allow students to skip classic material in classes that they deem is offensive, etc. The "university lefties" have been threatening people with violence, rioting, burning, assaulting and battering people, barricading people in auditoriums and college buildings, etc., all in the name of preventing people like Ben Shapiro, Milo Yiannopoulous and Charles Murray from speaking on college campuses. They've succeeded in deplatforming Richard Dawkins.

The "university lefty" loonies are running the asylum, at least here in the US.
