The Hill can go and fuck itself. Lefty/liberals have crossed the Rubicon as far as I'm concerned and I don't care how they identify themselves (communist, socialist, Cultural Marxist, feminist or SJW.) they and their anti Western values need to be obliterated, the sooner the better as their should be no comprise with such deranged mentally ill cunts.

I disagree. The lunatic far-left all but dictates the terms of the debate in campuses all across North America and is very busy indoctrinating the student bodies with their rabid ideology that dictates the dehumanizing and disenfranchising of any and all opposition to that ideology. Their preaching is deliberately antithetical to open and rational discussion - you tow the party line or you're branded and made a pariah, or worse. They only wish to silence and abuse the opposition. They wish to strip them of their humanity, strip them of legitimacy, and strip them of their voice in society. What's more they do so through the use of post-truth tactics which have no regard for the verity of the claims made in their rhetoric - they only care for the emotional effect of it - if it moves the people in the direction they wish.

If you think this is restricted to college and university campuses then you need to pull your head out of your neurotic ass. It's omnipresent in the left in general.
But at least they're not driving cars into people.
So they should use trucks like your muslim friends?

You have to be a real moron to want to remove statues, and a real moron to care if they do.

It's morons vs. morons. We should leave them to fight it out.

Here's the thing - and do pay attention now - the snippet quoted above references what the Mayor of Charlottesville actually said. That doesn't change whether it's reported by The Hill or by the KKK email newsletter that is Infowars and Breibart. Do you think the Mayor of Charlottesville didn't say these things? Do you think The Hill made this shit up? You do realise the Mayor's comments were reported across the media don't you?

Now, if you want to take issue with what the Mayor actually said, then have at it, we're all adults, we can take it. And if your inclinations is to tone-police the internet then please, be my guest. But dismissing what the Mayor of Charlottesville said on the basis of the media outlet which reported his words does rather sound like you're making excuses for exactly the kind of idiocy he's speaking out against.

Get a grip man, and put your ideology aside for half an hour eh?

I was appalled by Trump's equivocality over the violence in Virginia, where he said: "What I condemn is the violence that's been done by any side, by all sides, in all this."

Oh wait, that was Jeremy Corbyn on the violence in Venezuela.

Is the crazy right going to convert us all? Should I be worried -oh gawd tell me already- how much should I be worried about this? Don't start with the violence, christ we have people shooting each other on the highways here, and grilling ex-lovers, so that's not likely to phase me. It's the conversion bit, we're going to go back in time aren't we? :nervous:

He also served in the U.S. Army, with distinction, for 32 years. He was anti-slavery, or at least as anti-slavery as a white, wealthy Southerner could be at the time. But don't expect historical nuance.

I had a bit of a discussion with a moron on FB, who was going on about how the Southerners didn't have anything to say these days because they unconditionally surrendered. Actually, nothing could be further from the truth, and in fact the Confederate government never surrendered. That's because after the fall of Richmond the government, for all practical purposes, ceased to exist. There were multiple surrenders, by different commanders, of individual armies. The first was the Army of Northern Virginia, on April 9th, 1865, when Lee surrendered to Grant. It was a negotiated surrender, troopers were allowed to just go home as long as they turned in their weapons and promised not to take up arms again. Lee was actually escorted back to his Virginia home by an honor guard of Union troops. The last surrender was by Stand Watie, a Cherokee Chief and Brigadier General in the CSA, in June of 1865. That marked the final end of the hostilities.

History isn't their strong suit.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

I would be interested to read any attempt at justification by the relevant authorities (presumably the uni in question) for their decision to remove the statue.

Presumably the justification is something along the line that as the commander of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia Lee was a leading figure in the war to defend the right to own slaves, and honouring with monuments in prominent public places is a slap in the face of African Americans who make up 12.7% of the total U.S. population. It is not an attempt at justification. it is justification.

People rarely are pure evil or pure good. I do not doubt that General Lee was at his core an honourable man who, as Lacky mentioned, served in the U.S. Army, with distinction, for 32 years and was as anti-slavery as a white, wealthy Southerner could be at the time, but none of that negates his military activities as a principal defender of slavery. Erwin Rommel too was an honourable man. Beginning in 1911, he served the German army with distinction for 33 years, and he was as anti-Nazi as a career soldier in the German army could have at the time. I would still understand German-Jews getting quite upset if there were any monuments in prominent public places commemorating him.
I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein’s brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops. - Stephen J. Gould
