Even burning coal, you get more efficiency generating electricity from it and driving cars, compared to internal combustion.

Once the infrastructure is in place ICE engines will be relegated to niche markets.

One of them being serious exploration of the Australian outback. In a perfect world, I'd have an electric vehicle (charged mainly from my own solar cells) for city driving and a radius of, say, 200 km from Melbourne, and an economical diesel 4WD for journey's deep into Oz (better fuel economy from a diesel on the open road rather than city driving, and no real pollution issues)
