I hope not - I'm happily married (to a brunette). As for redheads - I wouldn't say that I find them unattractive, but I've known one or two and never been attracted to them. :dono: I guess maybe my sample size is too small.

Ahh.. cheap grog. I remember it well.
RPizzle wrote:Do you or have you played any sports? I play rugby (hooker/sometimes flanker) and hockey (goalie/sometimes defensive defenseman)
I currently play cricket (poorly) and used to play volleyball (reasonably well, but stopped when I injured my thumb and it just wasn't getting better while I continued to play. About 2 years after I stopped I think it was finally fully better, but I didn't get back into it.) My favourite sport by far is snow skiing, but you don't really play this.
RPizzle wrote:Do you have any particularly nerdy habits? I'm a manga/anime nerd. Plus, what's more, I played D&D in high school AND had a Warhammer 40k tabletop army! Beat that.
Hmmm... I enjoy writing software. Is that nerdy enough? I don't really have any nerdy hobbies.

I could never do pick-up lines. I just couldn't keep a straight face.

Hitch I suspect.
I used to be an atheist. Then I realised I was god.

Okay. About this:
RPizzle wrote:As far as powers...I do not believe that the President should have any power to send troops without Congressional authority.
1) What if there's a quickly developing military situation and Congress is out of session? And even if they were to be assembled, couldn't the debates take a long time if there was a particularly fast-moving situation that was changing hourly?

2) What do you think of other mostly modern and responsible countries having good, technologically advanced and extensive military forces, so that they can deal with things like failed states, sort out civil wars, and perform regional defense?

3) Will civilization survive this century better off, or are we basically fucked?

4) What do you think of a world government; and if you think it's a bad thing, then how else could we sort out international issues where everyone is passing the ball and no-one's really taking responsibility for?

I indeed screwed up by using an absolute. I really don't know how to respond to this though, because Bush basically started an entire war on his own by using the temporary Presidential action, then Congress followed suit. I'd say at the very least have an on call committee which must authorize any temporary action. This question would require significantly more pondering though.[/quote]
2) What do you think of other mostly modern and responsible countries having good, technologically advanced and extensive military forces, so that they can deal with things like failed states, sort out civil wars, and perform regional defense?
Honestly, I'm not really big into unilaterally stepping into others' affairs. I believe that a military is necessary for the protection of an individual nation. This would likely extend to the UN as their mission is generally peacekeeping. This does bring up a large question of areas like Sudan, Myanmar, and other countries/regions which are killing their own people. I do not claim to have a way to fix this without starting additional wars across the globe, so I must be inclined to say that the people must rise up on their own. This is not a 'good' solution by any means to me.
3) Will civilization survive this century better off, or are we basically fucked?
This is actually a difficult question. I have very serious reservations about the spread of Radical Islam and its increasing militancy. In fact, I would say that my personal concerns align well with Hitchens viewpoint, without being a War Hawk. I don't see a resolution in the near future, but I also doubt that anyone is going to be willing to press the button. However, I don't know how much I really worry about this, because in that case I'll probably be dead, and whatever is left of humanity will be back in the stone age. In reality, I'd say survive is more probable, but that fucked is very close behind.

4) What do you think of a world government; and if you think it's a bad thing, then how else could we sort out international issues where everyone is passing the ball and no-one's really taking responsibility for?
A world government is a very pretty idea. However, it is just that, wishful thinking. This would simply end up as the largest cliques trying to vie control from each other. I do wish I were more idealistic, but any government has flaws; many governments combined would simply compound that issue.

I was referring to the Holocene Extinction Event and Global Warming, which are far greater threats than anything else out there, islam included. Could you re-answer in light of this?

Global warming! To bastardize Anchorman... "It's so hot out here...Atheism was a bad choice." /end funny. I think this is a concern, though I have no real expertise on this subject. I won't then be able to comment on the probabilities or even the scientific merits. I will not speculate.

A Comet/Meteor would probably be very unlikely. However, if one was headed on a direct course, then really there wouldn't be much to do about it...except dying.

I'd say within our lifetimes, we're looking fairly good. Our kids will just have to rough it I guess.

I'm back. For the last couple weeks I have been working like a dog. Anything new and exciting happen while I was gone? Anyone miss me? Anyone remember who I am?

Um, can you please offer an executive summary of yourself, to bring me up to speed?

I missed you terribly.

Next question: Which books on atheism, if any, have you read? Was there one that you liked best?

Oh wow. I looked at this post for like 2 seconds days ago planning on responding...then promptly forgot about it. Anyway, I have read a smattering of works from the various atheist authors. I'll have to look specifically for which books I have read, though it is funny that you ask now, because I just started re-reading some of Darwin/Dawkins' books so that I'll be up to speed again once 'The Greatest Show on Earth' comes out. Afterward, I really want to read all of Hitchen's material, PZ's, and the like. My current favorite, even though its more of a rant, would be the God Delusion.

Currently working on: Origin of Species
Next: Descent of Man

I tried reading origin of species but found it a bit slow going - maybe I should try again.

Next question:

Why don't you post in three syllable word association or 6 word story? These are the greatest threads ever.

They seem pretty inane to me. Now, if you would like to play some fun games with me, then I'd recommend you go to http://www.PlayOK.com and start playing Shogi, Go, and Chess (you probably already know this one).

Shogi (Japanese Chess) is a fantastic game which is significantly more complex than regular, boring chess. Do it! It's fun.

 WHAT? Chess is the best game in history, and the fact that you write it off as boring means that the one you mention probably isn't any good and is about as entertaining as pokemon. I'll try to remember it for the "don't bother" list that I carry in memory. :lay:

I play both games, and like them both. I do favor Shogi significantly more, however.

General Rules:
Shogi uses a 9x9 board instead of 8x8.
The pieces are for the most part the same, with slight variations (no queen, slight movement limitations, addition of gold and silver generals etc.)
No pieces die, so you cannot 'simplify' by trades: Whenever you capture a piece, you can place the captured piece on the board in lieu of taking a movement. In fact, having pieces in hand makes for more complicated movement to prevent dangerous drops.
There is a promotion zone (last 3 ranks/Enemy camp) which allows you to promote pieces to gain additional movement.
There are a few other minor assorted rules, but that is the bulk of it.
Since no piece 'dies' its nearly impossible to force a stalemate situation (1% or so of games end in draws, mostly based on repetition)

You are completely right though! Ad hominem attacks mean this game is terrible! Also, who am I to doubt that Western Chess is the best game in history. I just didn't know that board game preference had objective 'truth'. Cute arguments, and slightly lulzy. :hehe:
