Sinterklaas and xmas are two totally different events. Sinterklaas is a non religious event and is mainly for the kids. Small presents are exchanged by older kids and adults but usually a very restricted price is agreed upon often no more than €10. Often a family or a group of friends who agree to meet on the evening of the 5th will draw out of the hat the name of the person that they have to make a 'surprise' for. You are expected to let your fantasy rip and build something impressive containing your present.

Xmas has always been a religious event but these days with churches almost empty it has turned into an eating festival.
The two have always existed side by side as they have a totally different function.
