without bothering to go back and check, I believe that felling those 400,000 sq km will leave about one percent.
So not all that much of an exaggeration.
Maybe you should have checked. The 400,000 hectares (not square kilometres, by the way. Tasmania's total size is only 68,000km²) were added to a 800,000 hectare area that was put into protected mode earlier, and the total of that is only a fraction of the 3.2 million hectares of native forests covering the island. So, yeah, exaggeration+.
I do apologise. I shouldn't rely on idiots for my facts. :hehe:
You do realise that 400,000 square kilometres is 1000 times larger than 4000 square kilometres, right? :ask: Right? .... Right? :?
Yes. So, have a look at what you wrote. That's in reply to me mentioning 4000 km², which in turn is the exact same size as 400,000 hectares.

Whatever. Half of Tasmania's 68,000 km² is covered by native forest, so cancelling a moratorium on 4000 km² of it goes nowhere near your claim that this means "allowing virtually all of the remaining virgin forest to be logged".

Well, I did say "without bothering to go back and check".

Having had another look, it appears that the 400,000 ha was part of 500,000 ha that were earmarked as "high conservation value". So it was the bulk of what was worth saving. (they wanted to include the other 100,000 as well but were defeated in that).
Tasmania might have a lot of native forest cover. But how much of that is actually virgin forest, of any real value, is less clear. They certainly chopped down the really spectacular trees about a hundred years ago.
Over 85% of Tasmania's old-growth regnans forests are gone, and it is estimated that fewer than 13,000 hectares of these extraordinary trees remain in their old-growth form. Almost half of them are to be clearfelled. Most will end up as paper in Japan.
In any case, in the later articles, it appears that they have now dropped this attempt, due to threats from the UN, and more importantly the halving of the price of wood chip in the last couple of years.

The politics of logging in Tasmania are about as corrupt as you can get :

But those letters are not silent.

They're just waiting their turn.

In other Strayan news, a man died today after being bitten by a coastal taipan in his lounge room. Welcome to Straya where the world's 2nd (or 3rd) most deadly snake lives in your lounge room.

Toyota is getting desperate. Unable to obtain a seal of approval in Tasmania it advertises the fact that it has attracted the approval of a seal.

The seal, by the way, is NOT VENOMOUS! Apart from one or two lounge lizards snakes, no Straian fauna is!
