Both of them are defensive constructions, and they are part of several projects that became collectively known as the Limes. Originally they were called Munimentum Traiani, which translates as Trajan's Bulwark. It did not consist only of actual walls. Long stretches of the Danube were part of it. The word "limes" has many meanings, but they all have this in common: A limes is a line demarcating something from something else. In this case it is fair to say that "limes" means border, and the original appellation, Trajan's Bulwark, makes it clear enough that all the limes we are talking about here originally served as a defence of the Roman empire.
