Or simply make so many rules that no one can go a day without violating one. Or simply state that everything that is not expressly permitted is prohibited and then refusing to expressly permit anything.

The Marxist Progressives of the US have used the former as their mechanism for imposing dictatorship. Hopefully Trump will sign an executive order on Day One that says the following: "As President of the United States and pursuant to my Executive authority I hereby revoke and repeal all prior Executive Orders issued by any President and I hereby revoke and prohibit the enforcement of any and all federal regulations created pursuant to any such revoked Executive Order."

Bingo! Most of the last hundred years of Marxist Progressive "administrative state" despotism disappears overnight, leaving only the repeal of other statutes enacted by Marxist Progressive Congresses by this Republican Congress, which can be done by reference, as in "All laws promulgated by the Nth Congress of the United States (insert liberal progressive controlled congressional session numbers extending back however long is necessary here) are hereby repealed and revoked."

In two fell swoops Marxist Progressivism is set back to square one and we are free once more.

That is a simple but brutal piece of street philosophy which would look really great on a tee shirt or a billboard Whoever came up with it had their head screwed on. But it sounds glib till you actually realise how serious it is

It also echoes: "You have nothing to fear if you have nothing to hide". There are millions of examples disproving that false platitude. Significantly, it has been attributed to Joseph Goebbels.

If individuals have a right to privacy then the nothing-to-hide argument is irrelevant - it doesn't matter if people do or don't have something to hide, their right to privacy trumps either consideration simply because a right to privacy means individuals control access to the information they choose to keep private. If the nothing-to-hide argument was valid then governments would apply it to themselves, and rather than just granting themselves powers to access the private information of individuals they would also grant individuals powers to access the private information of government. After all, if governments have nothing to hide then they have nothing to fear from individuals knowing whatever it is they're getting up to, do they(?)
