I know a lot of people that write very good English but are afraid to speak it. My Swiss friend is a native French speaker and won't speak to me so we have to text.

I am not afraid, I speak it but I've acquired it through reading and writing so these skills are more developed, naturally. Some say I'm eloquent but I'm just bookish. Immersion is different. I have accumulated over a year of life in Russia just from business trips and speak Russian fluently and very colloquially while making mistakes in writing, albeit minor ones.

But the violent protests against it have come from the anarchist left. It's liberal economics that has been the greatest boon to mankind and the greatest poverty-fighter. If you want to see poverty, look to places that have gone far left.

If you want to see people poor, look to true socialist states. I don't mean western capitalist countries, like Norway and Denmark, etc. who operate "liberal social democracies" (capitalism with a social safety net). Those western countries are not leftist, they're liberal.

They are social-democracy, not neoliberal. Neoliberalism has been a fucking disaster for our societies. What kind of blinkers does it take to ignore the fact that much of our prosperity has been built on debt (both financial and environmental)? Borrowing to get out of poverty doesn't get you out of poverty. It just gets you more into debt.

As I said, state violence is FAR MORE DESTRUCTIVE than a couple of cop cars overturned and bricks thrown through windows. Only someone like you could doubt this obvious point.

According to the United States Census Bureau 15% of the US population lived at or below the poverty line in 2011.



While I'd definitely prefer living in the US rather than North Korea, it's not exactly a ringing endorsement of capitalism as exemplified by the wealthiest nation on the planet, is it?

And don't give me that crap about most of even the poorest in the US having TVs, fridges and smartphones. Firstly, Henry VIII had none of those either. Secondly, even if the poor had not spent money unwisely on all those luxuries, they'd still be short of funds to cover the cost of quality education, health insurance and so forth, not to mention the sort of gadgets the vast majority of the US population takes for granted and can afford.

A system where thousands of the nation's full-time employees (looking at the nation's biggest employer, Walmart and also McDonald's among others) are entitled to food stamps and medicaid may be preferable to living in Venezuela, but for 40 million people the best that the capitalist system can offer them is still a shithole.
