A new poll by global research company Ipsos finds that just over half (53%--very much 17%/36% somewhat) of those in 15 developed countries self-identify as a “feminist” – someone who advocates and supports equal opportunities for women.

In fact, while women are not an unexpected majority (57%-- 19% very much/38% somewhat) who may self-identify as a feminist, half of men (48% – 14% very much/34% somewhat) in these countries also identify this way.

All depends how the question is asked. I support equal opportunities for women. But, I'm definitely not a feminist.

That's because you think feminism = man hating.

All depends how the question is asked.
The poll placed two options underneath this statement: "I define myself as a feminist - someone who advocates and supports equal opportunities for women" One option was "I agree strongly". The other was "I agree somewhat."

Right, but it's like saying "I define myself as religious - someone who believes in God." That's an overlapping Venn diagram there, and not everyone who believes in God is religious and not everyone who is religious believes in god. Same thing with their poll re feminism.

There is no overlap In "I define myself as a feminist - someone who advocates and supports equal opportunities for women" implied. The operative part of the statement is "I define myself as a feminist". the bit following the dash goes on to define feminism as "someone who advocates and supports equal opportunities for women". It is true that you can advocate and support equal opportunities for women without defining yourself as a feminist, and if you and Dave are to be believed, a sizeable portion of people calling themselves feminists do not support equal opportunities for women, but if the statement was aiming at that, the dash would have to be replaced by an "or". So, no overlap in the statement. Get back to me venn you haff understood.

To some people supporting equal opportunities for women is a subset of their support for equal opportunities for everybody. They might define themselves as humanists, liberals, democrats, socialists, communists or whatnot. Generally speaking, Forty Two is right about the Venn diagram. It just does not apply to the survey I have referenced.

Oh, absolutely there is. Hardly any feminists limit the definition of feminism to "equal opportunity." Even where there is equal opportunity, there can and very often is unequal distribution of males and females and that unequal distribution is often itself the subject of feminist activism.

For example, the famous video where feminists shut down a men's conference which was quietly discussing male suicide, by pulling the fire alarm. They weren't advocating for equal opportunities there. And, the professor who makes it her university policy to have women speak first in classrooms and at conferences. That's not equal opportunity. That kind of thing is very common.
