Christian militias in Central African Republic 'burnt witches at stake', says UN report

Christian militias in the Central African Republic have been accused of burning "witches" at the stake in a UN report leaked just days ahead of a visit to the war-torn country by the Pope.

The militias, who have fought a vicious sectarian war against local Muslims, kidnapped people they accused of witchcraft, tied them to stakes and then burnt them alive, the report disclosed.

The accusations have emerged as Pope Francis prepares for a visit to the CAR this Sunday as part of a week-long African tour promoting harmony between Christians and Muslims.

His visit is already in doubt because of security concerns, following a flare-up of violence in the CAR ahead of elections planned for December 27.

That is an interesting parallel to the pleading by muslim spokesmen that Islamic terrorists are not really Islamic. I disagree with this "excuse", partly because the terrorists emphatically label themselves as Islamic.

For the same reason, if the Christian militias identify themselves as christian, I will take them at their word. Of course, one could truthfully say that they are not evincing mainstream christian values, but they are still a part (if an aberrant part) of that religion, just like the jihadists are a part of Islam.

The distinction is, of course, that nowhere in Christian doctrine is there any mention of Christians killing people for any reason, much less in the name of God, whereas in Islam that is one of the fundamental tenets of the entire religion.
