No, it started at age 19 because I was in my first real job after high school as an armed security guard at a residential complex and one night I encountered an armed car thief who attempted to draw his weapon but did not when I beat him to the draw and told him I'd shoot him if he moved. He went to jail, I sat down and contemplated the event for a long time to decide whether I was actually capable of pulling the trigger in such a situation. My conclusion was that I could do so at need, and that was one of the decisions that led to my becoming a police officer and investigator.

I dunno, that depends on what the investigation reveals about their activities prior to purchasing the firearms. The point of the "criminal attempt" law is to be able to sanction those who possess firearms with the intent to commit a crime but who are thwarted in their intent for one reason or another. One need not actually commit the intended crime to be guilty of criminal attempt. If such laws were not in place then the bank robber or mugger whose crime is thwarted by, for example, the display of a weapon by his intended victim which causes him to abandon the attempt and flee, could not be arrested or prosecuted for that attempt.

It's funny.. I used to live in the most populous and multicultural area of Canada - Toronto. I worked all over the city, even the poorer areas of town, I'm sure there were bad people around, but I survived without being armed. If I can do that in one of the great cities of the world, surely you're fine in some backwater like Minnesota..
