Turkey shoots down Russian jet fighter
Re: Turkey shoots down Russian jet fighter
I want to know when turkeys evolved the weaponry to shoot down a Russian fighter jet!

Re: Turkey shoots down Russian jet fighter
The Russian plane was an old model Sukhoi ground attack fighter, well suited to attacks on ISIS position, but clearly no match for the US sourced F16 used by the Turks to shoot it down...

Yes, it was a old design, googled it - doesn't mean it wasn't a American old design. Planes do need to keep up to date though, that is one lesson for Putin.Seth wrote:American turkeys have jet engines too? Ahhhhhhhhh!Scumple wrote:It was a American jet disguised as a Russian jet. Su-25 frogfoot ground attack aircraft I presume. I've flown them. Against anything in the air other than say an attack heli they're hopeless. They can carry up to two infrared missiles with like 10km max range. Hopeless.

Hardly gonna prove much around here. Why bother? The purpose of this forum is pure entertainment and fault me if I'm wrong that doesn't require facts?Făkünamę wrote:Su-25 frogfoot ground attack aircraft I presume. Looking up details is such tedium

Oh I agree. I'd much rather go back to rock and roll, but today is a dark day.

Re: Turkey shoots down Russian jet fighter
It does look as if it did cross into Turkish territory, by crossing a narrow salient of land projecting into Syria. Technically, Turkey had the right to shoot it down (after a warning), but it was an incredibly stupid decision in terms of international diplomacy, and shreds any real hope of a determined, unified coalition against ISIS.

I fundamentally disagree with the postulate that entertainment but be devoid of facts to fulfill it's purpose. I am a pilgrim in an unholy land.Scumple wrote:Hardly gonna prove much around here. Saw an article that had a recording of the Turkish military warning the pilot not to enter Turkish airspace. Trust the arrogant Russians to ignore such warnings on the premise that Putin thinks he has a big dick and that nobody will mess with Russia.JimC wrote:It does look as if it did cross into Turkish territory, by crossing a narrow salient of land projecting into Syria. Re: Turkey shoots down Russian jet fighter
It did, if you think that what is given to the press is the truth. I would give it a fifty percent chance of being true. Unless the Russians said it, as they wouldn't have a motive to lie in that case.JimC wrote:It does look as if it did cross into Turkish territory, by crossing a narrow salient of land projecting into Syria. But if the Russians are saying one thing, and NATO the opposite, then it's just a fifty fifty toss-up.
Since the Turks are livid that the Russians have been bombing their own sponsored Turkmen fighters in Syria, who are terrorists according to Asad, then Turkey has every incentive to shoot down one of the bombers. And if the bomber is near the border, then they know that they can claim it crossed the line.
But what if Russia were to shoot down every NATO plane that strayed over it's airspace? Now that the precedent has been set, it has every right to. And even the Turks are only claiming that this plane strayed a mile inside the line. ( they have no choice anyway, as the wreckage is located well inside Syria, and the video shows it going almost vertically down ).
While there is a market for shit, there will be assholes to supply it.

Re: Turkey shoots down Russian jet fighter
From looking at the map, the salient was indeed long and narrow. If the Russian pilots were pushing the edge in terms of going close to the border, then it is fairly likely they passed over it. As I said, this means that Turkey was technically within its rights to shoot down the plane, however unwise it may have been. But I agree that the political motivations of all players in this drama are very murky indeed...
