If you take The White Album out of The Beatles discography you have a very average sixties band with maybe the one track here and there being likeable at heart. Unlike The Kinks where there are at least a hundred greats in the canon with The Beatles you only have around two dozen seamless classics. If you require any more Beatles bashing consider they sold their franchise to ISIS?

The Beatles 'forgot' dozens of songs

The Beatles may have written “dozens” of songs that were never released … because Paul McCartney and John Lennon forgot them.

McCartney claims that the absence of portable recording devices during the band’s heyday meant that songs he co-wrote with Lennon were frequently forgotten the morning after. Talking to the London Evening Standard, he said: “Things have changed quite a bit. You’ve got recording devices now which change the songwriting process. For instance, John and I didn’t have them when we first started writing, we would write a song and just have to remember it. And there was always the risk that we’d just forget it. If the next morning you couldn’t remember it – it was gone. There must have been dozens lost this way.”

It's silly to compare The Beatles to the Kinks etc. You were not there in 63*. There were NO bands of the sort in the UK recorded. There was no point in writing songs as nobody would sign you in the UK. Shadows, Cliff Richards and record companies promoting singers. Not bands. The pioneers (Beatles) invented the modern pop group.

The original bands recording, like the Beach Boys, were all in the US.

*I was. Everything up to 63 on the radio can be summarized by one song: How Much Is That Doggy In The Window? (though mine was the same in Finnish)

I don't think I could possibly come up with five Rolling Stones songs I like. Hmm, lets see. Hand of Fate...Emotional Rescue...Little T&A...that's all I can think of off the top of my head.

Top five Beatles songs? That's difficult but for the opposite reason: because there's so many I like. I'd say Rain...Blackbird...Long, Long, Long...Across the Universe...Eleanor Rigby. Again, though, that's just off the top of my head. I'm sure I'm forgetting some great ones.
