The worst religious war.

That was the 30 years war. We think that Muslim extremists are bad. They were nothing compared to the Christians who firmly believed, if they were Protestant, that Catholics had to die, and of course, if they were Catholic they firmly believed that Protestants had to die.

The 30 years war was one covering most of Europe (however, excluding Britain), and was Catholic killing Protestant, then Protestant killing Catholic, and turn about, again and again. It was estimated that the population of what is now Germany was cut in half (about 10 million dead) and the toll was felt all through Europe.

According to Prof. Pinker, this war killed more Europeans as a percentage of their population than any war before or since, including the world wars.

Was there anything more disgusting?

As wars go, I'm partial to Chinese stuff. Between the Three Kingdoms (184 CE - 280 CE), the An Lushan Rebellion (765 - 763), the Qing Dynastic War (1616-1662) and the Taiping Rebellion (1851 - 1864) they did in between 94,000,000 and 210,000,000 people, probably in most horrible ways. That's not counting the Chinese Civil War or anything the Mongols or Timurids got up to.

Not a valid comparison. Numerous wars over a 1500 year period does not compare to one connected series of wars over 30 years, all for the purpose of killing people whose religious beliefs vary from yours by a tiny smidgeon.

True, and they weren't religious, though I don't draw a lot of distinction between religious fanaticism and political fanaticism.

For a single war, though, I think the Taiping Rebellion beats pretty much everything else except (maybe) WWII. From 1851 to 1864 they killed between 20 and 100,00,000 people, estimates for WWII are 40-65,000,000.

Not much to like about wars in general, eh?
