Why should someone who passes through safe countries without stopping be treated as "in fear of their lives" ?

Plenty of refugees finish up just across the border from countries they are fleeing from - and are left in refugee camps to rot, not just for years, but for generations. Have a look at Palestinians in Lebanon and Syria, for example. I see nothing wrong with asylum seekers passing through countries in order to get to others where they have a hope of living in peace and relative comfort. In order to stop them from doing so Australia is lowering itself to the level of the neighbouring countries of refugees that do likewise by not allowing those refugees to achieve their ends.

The point about non signatory countries is that they just send the refugees straight back, or imprison them.
