Mormons becoming atheists
Mormons becoming atheists
Its seems that those who leave Mormonism (like myself) usually become atheists, they don't join other religions. Right now the exodus from Mormonsim is moving fast ans growing. it seems that people are taught to study about their religion the oops they learn to much and go rogue.
Here is an interesting blog about Mormonism which answers why they become atheists. http://www.wheatandtares.org/13566/reas ... -atheists/
It is just one man's opinion but it is well reasoned and fits what I have seen.
Any thoughts?

Re: Mormons becoming atheists
good news, My self, I just don't get how can any person gifted with reason even start believing in mormonism, but I guess that moving up from the depths of absurdity would direct you to atheism rather than to the only slightly less absurd

Re: Mormons becoming atheists
I would think a good reason for Mormons becoming atheist rather than another religion is that it was invented so recently that you can check out its history rather well and spot the exact moments of invention in a way people born into Christianity can't always do. Upon doing this the Mormon may think that if people can believe readily in some recently invented and well documented religion so easily then how can we say that Christianity and other religions don't also have such blatant invention lost to history?

The comments section after that article was scary. Even the people identifying as atheists, it's like the still wanted so desperately to believe

People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.
But those letters are not silent.
They're just waiting their turn.

Re: Mormons becoming atheists
If you still want desperately to believe I think you might be better off not fighting it and finding something to believe. My transition from Catholic to Buddhist to atheist was so seamless there was never any internal struggle. It was an evolution
I'm not sure I could handle fighting with myself over my beliefs. I wonder do they have support groups?

Sorry I didn't make it clear that said site is a Mormon believers blogspot. They are a bit more aware than other Mormons (more liberal) and they lament the loss of fellow believers to atheism. It isn't an atheist site. The comments section after that article was scary. Even the people identifying as atheists, it's like the still wanted so desperately to believe![]()
Animavore has it quite right, after you deconstruct Mormonism you just deconstruct religion in general (my experience)
As for Mormonism being "nuttier" than other religions they do have the theological advantage of having responses to the "Problem of Evil" and the 'Problem of Hell" so that helps them gain and keep members. And if you think about it the missionary boys are not about to start with "We represent the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints which was founded by a charlatan, who was also an adulterer and a pedophile" they tend to leave that out. Access to info on the internet about the whole history of Mormonism has decreased the number of converts over the last few years.
Svartalf, few if any religious people are gifted with reason. Hey most of the 10 commandment politicos we have here can't even recite them

I can fully understand I was hurt by a dodgy church and I turned away for longtime. Tbh it's nothing to gloat over nor proves anything but that person is on there own journey.
The Pope was today knocked down at the start of Christmas mass by a woman who hopped over the barriers. The woman was said to be, "Mentally unstable."Trolldor wrote:Ahh cardinal Pell. He's like a monkey after a lobotomy and three lines of cocaine.
Which is probably why she went unnoticed among a crowd of Christians.
