The St. Louis Tattoo Studio and County Guns businesses share a storefront in a Florissant strip mall less than ten minute drive from the epicenter of last night’s riots in Ferguson.
Their stores were not looted.

How much "looting" was being conducted by the Al-Jazeera journalists who were teargassed by the police on this occasion? Inquiring minds would like to know.

Likewise, how much "looting" was this journalist engaged in? Who was arrested whilst charging his mobile phone battery away from the protest area?

Oh, and how come there was a female member of the clergy in the police car as well?

Accidentally gassed in the US (still not a good thing, I know) vs being jailed for years in Egypt on trumped up terrorism charges...

I know which country deserves greater censure for its treatment of Al-Jazeera journalists...

True, but then isn't the USA supposed to hold itself to higher standards?

One would like to think so...

However, it all hinges on whether the gassing of the journalists was done through malice and aforethought, or was appallingly careless, or simply a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time...

The initial shooting of the black youth should remain the main focus, though...

Oh it gets even better ... apparently, one of the people teargassed during the free fire zone incident was none other than Missouri State Senator Maria Chappelle-Nadal.

How much "looting" was this woman doing, again?

This ''and this is why we carry them'' argument is the basic stupid argument that's always behind guns.
We've created a shit world, therefore we need more shit to cope with it.

It's a bit like a loony carrying a big bottle of aspirins, because he keeps banging himself on the head with a mallet. Yes, it makes complete sense to carry the aspirins. To a loony.
While there is a market for shit, there will be assholes to supply it.

The interesting thing about "the press" and the police when it comes to riots, and indeed any other police emergency is that the Supreme Court has said that journalists have no greater right to be in a public place than any other citizen does, and therefore if the police have declared a riot and ordered everyone out of the area, that includes journalists.

I've been tear-gassed during riots as a journalist too. No big deal...just carry a mask when you go to cover riots.

Bad shit happens during riots and some police officers do some of it. That's a good reason to stay away from riots. But your question is valid and it's clear that the officers exceeded their lawful authority. Hopefully they will be identified and punished for doing so. That does not, however, reflect the official policies of any police department much less all police departments. Cops are human beings and they screw up just like you do.

What else can business owners do other than protect their property against rioters and looting? The police can't and won't do it. You can spout utopian blather all you like, but when the gasoline bombs and rioters come out, you're on your own and either you protect you and yours or you don't. THAT is why we carry guns.
It's a bit like a loony carrying a big bottle of aspirins, because he keeps banging himself on the head with a mallet. Yes, it makes complete sense to carry the aspirins. To a loony.
Except in this case it's somebody else smacking you in the head with the mallet, and you need a gun to stop them from doing that, which is exactly what happened at the tattoo parlor, where NOBODY GOT SHOT because the owners displayed sufficient deterrent force by being well armed and armored that rioters declined to attack them. That's how private firearms are used defensively the majority (some 60%) of the time. Lawful display of the firearm deterred the criminality. Nobody got hurt. What's wrong with that, pray tell?
