Wildlife officials are investigating a black bear attack on a woman running with her dogs Thursday morning. It happened on Forest Service property in the Cedar Flats area north of Columbia Falls.
Initial reports say the bear attacked the dogs and then attacked the runner, before leaving the scene.
27 fatal black bear attacks in the 2000s=2.7/y on 350 million people=<1/1000000. You may as well go into the Colorado woods with lightning protection as "bear protection".
Well, yeah. Lightning is quite a killer around here in the mountains. But who said we're limited to self defense against only one peril. A comprehensive plan and equipment that covers those perils that one judges to be in need of consideration is always best. A handgun (or rifle) has many uses in a survival situation beyond bears. It's a very flexible tool that's good for putting down all sorts of varmints one might encounter in the woods.
Around me it's at best one attack attempt per dog.How many dogs attack runners every year?

Come on, you're a groundstander, not a runner.
What does that have to do with anything at all. You're allowed to take any risk you like. The point here is that you also are allowed to mitigate those potential risks by proper preparation and planning. You can not run if you are worried about it, or you can carry a gun if you think you might be attacked by a dog, or a bear, or a lion, or a snake or some other varmint. How many runners injure themselves every year?*
I do.
But you're an obsessive insurance-poor jingoistic control freak. Do you even run?
