D18 fledged today.

The expression on the other two is precious, like "WTF, what's he doing?"

I'm betting D20 is next.

And D19 fledged today too.

So I predicted wrong. D20 is alone in the nest with a thunderstorm, lightning and rain.

Brookfield Maine Eagle cam

Parent birds were not bringing enough food. The older eaglet killed the younger today and is eating it. The survivor is not mature enough to fledge yet. It is a heartbreaking cam to watch, the eaglets have been crying for the parents for many days.

Decorah eaglets: One was down on a highway and retrieved by a licensed raptor rehabilitator. They kept it overnight, fed it, gave it fluids, and released it the next day. It was able to fly away. It stayed in the area and the parents were seen with it bringing it food.

The second eaglet was found down in a stream. It has a fractured humerus and will have surgery to repair it tomorrow. It is receiving supportive care in the mean time.

The third has not been seen since it fledged.

Many of the people who have been watching this family are pretty upset. That seems expected and understandable. However, 40% of these fledges don't survive, and the breeding pair only need to replace themselves over a lifetime and add a few numbers in addition to themselves. They are excellent and experienced parents and this clutch was numbers 18, 19 and 20 for them.

The falcons being watched have been fledging too, not every story is successful there either.
We had a nest nearby me where the female's legs became entangled in fishing line. They were able to capture her and remove it, but her efforts to free herself resulted in two of the babies getting knocked out of the nest. They had only recently hatched, so were small.

Bummer to hear that things aren't going so smoothly, but I guess survival has always been tough in the wild.

B3, the lone chick in the Berry College, Georgia nest has successfully fledged. There are some really nice action shots of her on the facebook page.

Looks like a spiral fracture, mid-humerus to me. That is a better site than closer to either joint.

On the SOAR site.

No surgery today. Treating superficial infections/infestations first.

I hope it's got health insurance.
Or do birds get free socialist medical care in the land of the ''free'' ?

I'll bet black birds don't get free operations in racist america.

One does in this country. At least, our royal family does.

And they get their gamekeepers to poison them, for picking off some of their grouse and pheasants.

Pro bono and paid for by donations. Some municipalities have contracts with service providers and care is paid for by taxes on a retainer type arrangement. Federally protected species have to be turned over to facilities that have a license to care for those species.
Native wildlife is protected in all states. Invasive not protected in all states.
Blackbirds are native, so if an injured bird were found they could be turned over to a licensed rehab or treatment contractor for care.

The English sparrow is not protected in Montana. I don't know what you guys call it.

In the US the wildlife belongs to the people, not the elites.
