It would be weird for me to carry on my hip. I had a concealed carry permit. If you can believe it, it's utterly alien to me too. It's the sort of thing I'd expect to see in the south, but not in California. Hell, I'm forty, I've lived in three major American cities, and I've never even seen a gun in person, apart from the ones carried by po-po. I've only ever seen handguns on po po and at a shooting range. Seen plenty of rifles in the country, and grew up with a .22 in my dad's wardrobe that I used to fool around with when he wasn't home...

Well I was mostly being tongue in cheek in that last sentence, but if we're being serious, if I'm out shopping for groceries and I see a guy walking around with a gun on his hip, I'd be a bit nervous. Well, news flash for non-Americans: Many of the people you see in public have concealed carry permits and are carrying their weapons perfectly peacefully on them almost every day. Don't get me wrong, I'm not defending the practice, just stating the reality of the US.

That's just it. They don't. When you grow up in a certain culture, you don't see that culture as weird. Do you think it's weird to be an Aussie Rules Football or cricket fan?
