Yep, GRRM lost the plot in book 4. He's rich and old so I kinda understand. Doesn't bode well for the series, though. Although I liked how the show writers are novelizing so far, so it could be good.

The whole section wasn't in the book. Seems to be padding to move the big battle with Mance Rayder to the end of the season. If Bran and Jon met now there'd be uproar.
