Johann Rosenmüller (1619-1684) was an organist at the Nikolaikirche in Leipzig. He also liked to play his personal organ. In 1655 he, along with several choir boys, was charged with sodomy and imprisoned. He escaped and fled to Venice where he became the maestro di coro and composer at the Ospedale della Pietà, position Vivaldi held about half a century later.

Rosenmüller's compositions were influenced by the light and airy "Italian style", and as they trickled back into Germany this style began to replace the more ponderous French music. Three years before his death he returned to Germany where he became choir master at Duke Anton-Ulrich of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel's court.
