Re: The best countries to be a woman
My curiosity was peeked by the high ranking of the Philipines, so I dug around a bit for background information. I found out the following: The Insight Report has been funded and published by the World Economic Forum, an institution founded in 1971 by Klaus Schwab, Professor of Business Policy at the University of Geneva from 1972 to 2002. He still is its chairman. Its mission is to develop "global partnership of business, political, and intellectual leaders." Its participants are almost exclusively greying, affluent, fat, middle aged males, most of them of Caucasian ethnicity, who have a tendency to rent entire hotels in prestigious ski resorts for $2000 per room per night to talk about equality of opportunity. I am now not surprised that a nation well known for the number of impoverished women looking for greying, affluent, fat, middle aged sugar daddies, most of them of Caucasian ethnicity, to help them take care of their extended, equally impoverished families, would rate so highly.klr wrote:http://www.bbc.com/news/world-24650912 (lots of purty graphs)
Top 10 countries
1. Iceland
2. Finland
3. Norway
4. Sweden
5. Philippines
6. Ireland
7. New Zealand
8. Denmark
9. Switzerland
10. Nicaragua
The survey reminds me of another one that Time Magazine published about three decades ago. That one graded nations according to its Freedom Index, and it too had lots of purty graphs. Once it became apparent that the freedom criteria consisted chiefly of lack of constraints to exploit the labour force and conversely a similar lack of regulations to ensure minimum standards for safety and quality of products, the resultant ranking was pretty predictable. It was about then that I learnt to read any published results with the nature of its financiers firmly in mind. It was also the last time I ever bought a copy of Time magazine.

I wouldn't be too quick to make assumptions wrt the Philippines. Over the past decade or so, more and more Korean farmers have been importing Filipina wives because Korean women are increasingly disinclined towards the farming lifestyle in favor of big city lights. Stories of the high failure rates of those couplings inspired some research. Turns out that wives in the Philippines aren't treated like domestic slaves and baby factories, as they have been historically treated here in Korea. They seem to be something of an exception in Asia.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Women_in_the_PhilippinesDespite foreign influence, courtship and relationship in the Philippines is considered conservative. The man will have to court the woman and prove his love for her before he can win her heart. Sometimes the courtship period would last for years. Parents prefer their daughter to be courted in their home, so they can have a chance to know the man. It is during the courtship period that the man would put his best foot forward to create a good impression on the woman and her family. Generally, the man is being measured on his being a gentleman, ability to respect the woman's family, and servitude (the extent of what he was willing to do to prove his love for the woman). Usually, the woman is courted by several men and will have to choose the best from among her suitors. Courtship and relationship remain the same for rural and urban areas despite the modern western influence.[14][15][16]
Culturally in the Philippines, divorce is viewed as negative and destructive, because of a tradition that emphasizes that the family is the core social unit, especially for the Filipino wife. Divorce is not perceived as a solution to any matrimonial-related problem because it hinders the development or progress of the basic community unit. Therefore, husband and wife are obligated to fix any problems within the boundaries of the marriage.[3]
It should always be noted, though, that pre-colonial women in the Philippines enjoyed equal status with men. Prior to colonization, both men and women could get a divorce for the following reasons: failure to meet family obligations, childlessness, and infidelity. Children, regardless of gender, and properties were equally divided in a divorce. Since a man needed to pay a dowry to the woman's family, she was required to give it back should she be found at fault. If the man was at fault, he then lost the right to get back his dowry.
In the Philippines, society valued offspring regardless of gender. Female children were as valuable as male ones, mainly because they recognized that women are as important as men. Parents provide equal opportunities to their children. Filipino daughters can also go to school like Filipino sons, Filipino daughters can also inherit property like Filipino sons, and Filipino daughters can also become village chiefs like Filipino sons.

My assumptions are based on no more than several men I have become acquainted with over the years who have acquired Filipino mail order brides and on some casual reading. When I found some information on the authorship of the Insight Report, I melded the two sets in an obviously tongue in cheek manner, although my expressed contempt for conservative, elitist scum remains a seriously maintained sentiment. The more I read about the latter the more I loathe the selfrighteous bloodsuckers.

Re: The best countries to be a woman
They deserve to be loathed, imo. I have an acquaintance over here who married a Korean and had a kid by her. He started out just as a drinking buddy, but over a few years, conversations revealed that he's a Texas conservative and racist. He considers his wife and all Koreans to be inherently inferior. He regards and treats her like a slave, in my opinion. Needless to say, I have since put as much distance between us as possible.Hermit wrote:Thanks for that, FBM. Re: The best countries to be a woman
Fuck it, if I was a woman, I'd choose the best country as the one where you get married and have a few kids, and the husband does all the work.

Women just want to get married and have a few kids?
The husband does all the work?
The land where Father Knows Best?

I don't think so.
Not one of your better jokes.
