I just saw the count was up to 29. Funny how nobody in the whole place was able to open up a can of Kung-fu whoopass on people with knives.

Edit: And yes, I wouldn't count on police to be there to defend me. I'd rather be prepared to take care of that myself.

It will be interesting to know the motivation; quite possibly islamist terrorists. However, one point about guns here is that the terrorists themselves didn't use them, presumably because they were too hard to obtain. If they had been easier to obtain, they could have killed more people, faster and easier...

I've noticed that in the stories I recall hearing out of China the terrorists didn't use guns. Maybe a supply-demand thing.

The lesson is that if everybody had firearms the outcome would have been quite different. Not only would more of the terrorists have been killed, but the terrorists in turn would have killed a lot more of the travellers.

It also suggests they haven't got a strong connection with other islamist terrorist groups, and/or smuggling arms to them is too hard...

Yep. I think most likely so.

From BBC:
...Mass knife attacks are not unprecedented in China. Some occurred in 2010 and 2012, but the attacks happened at schools and didn't appear to have political connections.
Chinese President Xi Jinping urged law enforcement "to investigate and solve the case and punish the terrorists in accordance with the law," according to Xinhua.
Xinhua said the Kunming railway station is one of the largest in southwest China.
Chinese Premier Li Keqiang asked local authorities to ensure safety at public places, Xinhua reported.
Two weeks ago, 11 "terrorists" died in the Xinjiang region, Xinhua reported.
Frequent outbreaks of violence have beset Xinjiang, a resource-rich area where the arrival of waves of Han Chinese people over the decades has fueled tensions with the Uyghurs, a Turkic-speaking, predominantly Muslim ethnic group.

Had a look at Google Maps. Xinjiang is not far from all the Stans, but there's a big-ass mountain range separating them. I would imagine that smuggling anything through well-guarded mountain passes would be tough.

I gather that it is not just an islamic thing, but resentment against the resettlement of large numbers of Han Chinese in the region, somewhat like they have done in Tibet...

A few people were shot by police as well. If more people had guns, more of the murderers would have been shot, and a lot fewer of the innocent victims.

Maybe they have something against Chinese take-out.

If more people had guns, the murderers would also have had access to guns. What do you think would have happened then?

A few people with swords would have been enough, I think. I wonder if sword-carrying is legal in China.

You missed the point of my earlier post. If that was the case, the terrorists would have been armed as well, and, by starting the gunfight, would have killed many more they managed with knives before they too were gunned down.

But this is all absurdly hypothetical; China has an islamic terrorist problem, and there is no way on Earth they are going to suddenly decide to arm their population in imitation of Texas... ;)

Either they alter the oppression that has been stimulating the rebellion, or tighten down further, and have cadres of Red Army troops at every public place they can...

Guns don't kill people. Religions kill people.
