Is it immoral NOT to eat meat?

Post by pErvinalia » Sat Feb 01, 2014 2:30 pm

I mean, it tastes so fucking good! Anything that produces such feelings of pleasure, must surely be highly morally good. :tea: :food:

An close estimate of the number of animals killed globally for food every year is 50 billion.

I eat very little personally and what I do is raised and killed 'humanely' whatever that is.

Forgive me, Father, for I have sinned. For two entire days I ateth not of meat, and subsidith only on lowly vegetables.

Eat 2 pounds of bacon and a bag of jerky, my son. Go and sin no more.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

I had a nice fillet steak last night. I bet I enjoyed eating that steak more than the cow enjoyed being it. So I win.

I haven't eaten any meat today, unless you count chicken soup.

I intend to make up for it tomorrow.

We are omnivores by evolutionary heritage, although some of us probably eat more meat than is good for us.

What meat we eat ought to be raised and slaughtered as ethically as possible.

I'm not sure this argument ^^ is entirely convincing, morally, as there are probably plenty of things that make sense from an evolutionary point of view that would cause an embarrassing silence at a vicars tea party these days but....meat! yum!

Venison, for the win.

Our lean meat equivalent is kangaroo... :food:

I think the key point is that our digestive system is adapted well for a combination of a plant based and meat diet. A vegetarian option is certainly possible, but it is telling that one has to really work at getting sufficient protein, fat and fat soluble vitamins for health, particularly if you go the whole vegan path...

The aspects of our evolutionary past that would upset the "vicars tea party" tend to be more behavioural tendencies, rather than clear structural & functional adaptations. Mind you, some modern, logical rationalism may well upset them more... "Vicar, old bean, I have no need for that hypothesis" ;)

Mind you, if he/she/it were an anglican vicar, they're probably 90% there anyway... :hehe:

The total number of animals that are killed globally for food is far, far more than 50 billion. You're allowing your anthropocentric conceits to cloud your judgment.
I eat very little personally and what I do is raised and killed 'humanely' whatever that is.
I eat as much as I want and what I do is raised and killed "naturally."

God doesn't give a fuck if animals suffer. That's a fact, the evidence is everywhere.
Nor do animals give a fuck, if other animals suffer. With a few very rare exceptions, like some mammalian mothers, who only care about their nearest and dearest.

So why do we humans have to care more than god, or any other animal?
So long as it's out of sight, we DON'T really care about animals suffering. Given an easy choice, we would choose the option of least suffering for animals, but if it involved money or time or trouble, we won't go out of our way.

As an atheist and sceptic, I don't believe that suffering of animals matters.
As a human, I'd rather it didn't happen. But that's just my genes talking. There's nothing objectively good or bad about animals suffering, or being eaten. It's just our projective nature.
While there is a market for shit, there will be assholes to supply it.

To mistermack

That 'projective attitude' is vital, because it applies to our fellow humans. Not just to meat animals.

Because I 'project' my feelings as well as anyone else, I am very happy that here in NZ, meat animals are killed by a steel bolt, driven with explosive force, into the back of their skulls. It is quicker and less painful that the ridiculous triple cocktail injected into people by the American justice system under the death penalty.

Cheers!
