2 cops tase and restrain 100 lb 18yr old, and then...

Post by orpheus » Tue Jan 07, 2014 8:01 am

...a third cop shows up, says "we don't have time for this", and shoots the kid in the chest at point-blank range, killing him. In front of his family. Who were then not invited to the District Attorney's press conference about the incident.

It's a natural consequence of putting guns in the hands of morons.

And of backing them to the hilt, no matter what they do. I expect that medals have already been ordered.
The moral of the story is, no matter how disturbed someone gets, never call the police, unless you want them dead.
While there is a market for shit, there will be assholes to supply it.

And the parents of the psychotic schizophrenic claim he had no history of violence :bored:

The cops probably didn't have to shoot him, but it would never have come down to that if he were locked up in a mental facility for his own and others protection.
A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.

The common belief that schizophrenics are more likely to be violent towards others is not true.

"probably"? :nono:
but it would never have come down to that if he were locked up in a mental facility for his own and others protection.
It would never have come down to that if this particular cop (who was from a different district and had no previous experience with the kid, whereas the other cops did, and were doing just fine) hadn't charged into the scene and made the appallingly stupid and disgustingly inhumane decision to gun the kid down. It would never have come down to that if the cop wasn't so gung-ho about jumping right to a violent act. ("We don't have time for this" my ass.) Perhaps it would never have come to this had the cop in question been locked up for others' protection, since he clearly has a propensity toward violence.

Moreover, although locking up schizophrenics was common in the past (and still is in movies), with modern treatments is not usually necessary.

If the state decides to dump mental patients on the streets instead of treating them then it is incumbent on the state to provide the proper training to all first responders, whether they're cops, firemen, paramedics or what have you. The state of mental health care in the U.S. is fucking appalling and not likely to change any time soon. Prisons are NOT a suitable treatment venue, though apparently they're quite profitable. Slave labor usually is, ya know?
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Yes, but such training should be required in any case.

A 100 lb violent psychotic with a screw driver could kill you, which is where the problem is. When police are faced with a situation where they risk death or serious harm, out comes the pistol.

A 100 lb schizophrenic who had been tazed and was already subdued by two other cops? Yeah.

Death caused by psychiatric illness (Virginia events)

I highlight one post, but the whole thread is informative.
The mentally ill and their civil rights are more complex than the ideas of too many armchair moralizers.
But here’s the thing about rights. They’re not actually supposed to be voted on. That’s why they’re called rights. ~Rachel Maddow August 2010

Tellingly, there was a story a couple of days ago about how people with high IQ's are disqualified from becoming cops. :ddpan:
