Australia incest case: Filthy and severely deformed children found in remote farming community after generations of inbreeding

The filthy and severely deformed offspring of a horrifying incest cult whose members bred together for generations have been discovered in a remote farming community in Australia.

Apparently unknown to the 2,000 people with whom they shared their fertile valley township in New South Wales, at least 40 members of the reclusive Colt family raised four generations of inbred children in one of the country’s worst ever cases of child abuse.

According to the Sydney Daily Telegraph - which published details of New South Wales Children’s Court’s judgement on the family - the case only came to light when authorities were informed that children living in a network of huts in the valley did not attend school.

The subsequent New South Wales Police and Community Services investigation found deformed and disabled children living in squalor; unable to take care of themselves and lacking knowledge of basic hygiene, such as how to clean their teeth or use toilet paper.

Many of the children were suffering from severe health problems brought on by inbreeding, with a number diagnosed with homozygosity deformations – mutations caused by inheriting identical genes from both parents.

Hardly any were capable of intelligible speech, many were deaf and/or blind, and those that could understand what investigators were saying were painfully shy due to spending their entire lives without communicating with anyone other their immediate family members.

The name of the valley in which the family lived has been kept secret to avoid identifying the victims of child abuse, and the members have been given pseudonyms for the same reason. The surname Colt is not the real family name.

Despite this, New South Wales Children’s Court is understood to have released details of the case as it felt the world had to hear about one of Australia’s worst ever instances of incest.

The family is believed to trace back to the children’s great-grandparents, who were brother and sister. The incestuous siblings had a number of children, with these children raising another generation children of offspring among themselves. This third generation also chose to inbreed, giving birth to the children recently found living in squalor in the valley.

(continued, ad infintum...?)
What will the world be like after its ruler is removed?

Damn. It's not just in Tennessee, then? Did they find banjos?

No it's not just in Tennessee. I recall a boy in our school who was a close friend of one of mine (we never got on though) who's older sister was actually his mother and his grandmother was pretending to be his mother, he had a younger sister, which wasn't actually his sister, but his aunt, his mother's sister. Now this is where it gets complex. The Grandmother previously had a kid when she was younger who she gave up to her cousin, who was barren. The cousin raised the little boy not far down the road from her real mother who after three years had another kid with the man she married this girl is the sister/mother of the friend of a friend. Years later the cousin's kid (The first son of the Grandmother) and the sister/mother got drunk at a party. She got pregnant. She had no idea that this was her biological half brother, scandal and cover up emerged again. Now if you multiply that over the years in lots and lots of closed housing schemes all over the U.K. The sort of places where people never really escape from, then I think incest might be far more common than we think.

Though it doesn't have "The Hills have Eyes" aroma of the Crazy Bastards.

There is more room in the Australian emptiness for crazies like this to disappear into than many other countries, at least for a while...

I know. Completely as an aside this is what always bugged me about the lack of great outback horror movies from Australia. Peter Weir had some promise before he went onto "better" things, but it just seems like a perfect vast emptiness for a backdrop for the genre.

I'm going to need some sort of schematic.

Yeah, now that convoluted shambles was in a small family, imagine one with twelve kids an errant father with a couple of kids by other women, but then not all of "his" kids are his, a breakup, families playing musical chairs with their homes and pass the parcel with their kids. To be honest I'm surprised some of them are still vertebrates. Mind you down the coast some of them do have that "Innsmouth" look.

It's a bit harsh to dismiss all of them as crazies. It's not a life-choice that they made.
We all depend on our parents, to grow up as non-crazies. You can't blame the kids of this kind of family, they never had a chance.
Sounds like it's a tragedy caused by the great-grandparents.
