Marine 'devastated' at sentence

A former Royal Marine who murdered an insurgent in Afghanistan has said he is "devastated" and "very sorry" after being given a life sentence.

Sergeant Alexander Blackman, 39, will serve at least 10 years' imprisonment for murdering the Afghan national in Helmand province in 2011.

He has also been dismissed with disgrace from the Royal Marines.

(continued, not home for Christmas then?) :coffee:

I should think that there are a lot of people in Afghanistan who are devasted by what marines have done.
Fuck him
He KNEW what he was doing. He got caught. End of story.

It's a real disgrace that the others got nothing though. They should at least have been TRIED for conspiracy. Whether they did conspire could then have been decided by a court of some sort.

Anyone stupid enough to murder someone when they know they're being recorded and expect to get away with it is probably too stupid to be in charge of a weapon.
Fucking moron.

10 years is pretty lenient but necessary unreasonably. His defence lawyers did a good job

He got life, not 10 years, that is the likely time he'll serve if he keeps his nose clean.

His lawyers got him the maximum.

10 years tariff is low for a murder, the fact he was a soldier in a war zone presumably got his sentence down

Meh. He was just putting a terrorist out of our misery. After all, that's what they do to us when they can...and worse. Making it impossible to survive contact with our forces ought to be the prime directive of all military actions. Wars end more quickly and with fewer casualties that way.

Yeh. He only has the ability to see black and white.

They killed him, so he must have been a terrorist. It must be far less stressful on the brain, to live in such a simple world.
Seth could be George Bush.

Seth may be right. Soldiers are trained to kill so why expect them to do otherwise in a war situation? Also the guy was injured and there was no risk free way to help so putting him out of his misery could have been considered a act of sensible compassion? These heavy tariffs would never happen if he was dropping a bomb from the air yet they are often indiscriminate. Why military crimes should be tried by military lawyers who would weight things appropriately.

He was tried in a military court.
And if you want to re-write the Geneva convention, give it a go. But till then, a code that has been produced and agreed by the majority of the world will just have to do.
This guy said after killing him '' I've just broke the Geneva Convention ''. Silly cunt.

Anyway, on a battlefield is different to in someone's back yard.
If they were shooting people in YOUR back yard, you might want them to actually check if the people they were shooting were the enemy, or if it was just you, putting the cat out.
The fact that you are wounded doesn't make you the enemy.

You could be right. I'm sure I'd have said something like 'See that? he's reaching for a hidden knife there' to back my case up in court. :coffee:

I'm not sure he did break the Geneva convention because we are not legally bound to it since the Taliban are neither signatories of it nor do they follow it's protocol.
A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.

Seems a waste of resources keeping him banged up for years when a summary discharge would have dealt with the issue. Unlikely he'd repeat the offence on the streets of the UK. The law is a ass I guess.
