Well, color me informed!Xamonas Chegwé wrote:You'll lose that bet. And I won't get taxed on my winnings. I have worked for the gambling industry for many years. These days, the only tax is the standard corporation tax on the earnings of casinos, bookmakers, etc. They pay tax on their profits at the same rate as any other company. Their punters are not taxed at all (except by the casino's odds, obviously!)
I deal poker to people that have played for a living for decades and never paid a penny in tax! American gamblers get taxed on big wins even if they have lost 5 times as much in the same month! But, of course, you get to play with guns over there. We are all so jealous.

Just saw a story on the news about a doofus in California who just forfeited a 50 million jackpot despite his picture being shown on TV, and there's another 15 million jackpot in Florida that expires tomorrow.

I'd stuff it under the bed for six months and then figure out a way of laundering it.

Looks like somebody tried to burn it. I'd guess maybe it caught on fire accidentally or on purpose and someone threw it in the river to put it out.Xamonas Chegwé wrote:It was found in the water - a quick tumble dry should be plenty.Pappa wrote:I'd stuff it under the bed for six months and then figure out a way of laundering it.
The real problem is that just dipping it in water won't remove the inevitable traces of cocaine that are on some 80 percent of all paper money in the world, which traces give the government "justification" for seizing it from quite literally anyone they choose. Happens all the time in the US, where the DEA will stop someone at an airport who is carrying a large amount of cash, bring in a drug detection dog which will alert on any large amount of used bills, and then they seized the money as drug money and the owner is completely fucked, even if he didn't do anything illegal at all.
That's exactly why every year at Christmas I have a large amount of money in my bank account paid out in brand-new, uncirculated fifty dollar bills directly from the Federal Reserve. That way I have a cash stash that I know is not contaminated with drug residue that I can carry around without having to worry about the fucking DEA highjacking it. Christmas is the only time of year that the Federal Reserve will take orders for new currency from banks. It's a service they offer to grandma and grandpa who want to give their grandchildren a crisp new bill for Christmas. Otherwise, the rest of the year, there's no guarantee that the bills you get from your bank aren't massively contaminated with cocaine residue. Some bank workers actually wear nitrile gloves when handling used bills to avoid inadvertent exposure to it.
Been thinking about inventing a money laundering device that will clean used bills of cocaine residue. Got some good ideas in that regard.

I've accidentally run bills through the washer before Granted they were in a pocket, but once doesn't seem to damage them. If you put the bills in a pillowcase that was pinned closed or in a lingerie bag, they would probably be fine. The paper used for US currency has a fairly high rag content.

I'm surprised 60,000 pounds would float

That annoyed me so much I had to do the transform on paper using two cartesian planes. Only to discover I was right and the signs just have to be reversed and Lhasa Tibet is about halfway between Madagascar and Australia.

Being that the earth is a sphere, the "ad coelum" doctrine grants title to a wedge of property extending to the center of the earth and to the outer limits of the atmosphere. That has been recognized law for millennia.NineBerry wrote:Ever been to the other side of the globe visiting your property there?Seth wrote:private property is private, and when you buy it you gain title to everything on and under it

Re: Caveat Emptor and The Brooklyn Bridge
Unless the seller specifically reserves sub-surface or airspace rights as a part of the sale, everything under and over the surface becomes the property of the new owner. That is a fact of law. Both sub-surface and airspace rights CAN be severed, but I'm not disputing that, I'm merely saying that it was improper of the Congress to sever subsurface mineral rights of the public domain in the western states because doing so denied those states their right under the Equal Footing Doctrine to administer the severing of the public domain and granting of it to private individuals, and the revenue that was or could be generated therefrom. In other words, Congress did not steal from the original 13 states the value of the minerals beneath the surface, and so the states benefit from the value of those minerals along with the property owners. But in the western states the Congress coerced the states into forfeiting all right and title to all unappropriated lands within the boundaries of those states, including the mineral estates, and thereby denied the states the ability to fund their government needs by selling public lands and taxing mineral extraction, which instead goes to the federal government because when Congress issued land patents to much of that land to private individuals it did indeed sever the mineral estate.piscator wrote:NineBerry wrote:Ever been to the other side of the globe visiting your property there?Seth wrote:private property is private, and when you buy it you gain title to everything on and under it

The question is not whether or not mineral estates can be severed, it can. The question is whether or not the Congress had authority under the Equal Footing Doctrine to lay claim to ANY unappropriated lands within the boundaries of a new state or to sever any part of that "bundle of rights" that inhere to real estate. It is my contention, and the position of a good many legal scholars as well, that the Congress had no such lawful authority and that coercing the new states into abandoning their just claim to the lands within their boundaries as sovereign, as is the case in the original 13 states was a lawless and corrupt act produced and supported by corruption of the Supreme Court and Congress who conspired to advantage the central government over the new states in ways never intended by the Founders.
So all your insults simply demonstrate how bereft of intellectual integrity you are and do nothing to challenge or impeach either my arguments or my knowledge of the subject, which appears to outstrip yours by a country mile.
