Here's something I wrote about it a couple of months ago, footage has recently been shown in Amsterdam and Paris and the reactions have been phenomenal, with people generally saying it will absolutely blow your mind:-

I have been surprised of late by the number of people interested in science fiction or just fans of movies who have not even heard of this upcoming project of James Cameron's.

Avatar could easily be described as a labour of both love and hate for James Cameron. The original treatment for it was written in 1995 but the technology necessary to create the film was not available at the time, so no doubt dejected, Cameron pushed it aside and went off to make something else - a film about a boat; Titanic. Following on from Titanic's success and his interest with the real location of the ship he set about making a 3D documentary of the wreck and in the process, due to the cramped conditions in diving at such depths, had to invent some new techniques for filming 3D. Of course Cameron being Cameron, pushing the boundaries is part of his persona..

During the 10 year period since Titanic technology and CGI capability have improved greatly. Much of the way paved by Weta Workshop and the effects necessary for Peter Jackson's Lord of The Rings, and in particular the creation of a fully interactive CGI character in Gollum. Technology that is essential for Cameron's long-awaited project.

So what is Avatar about? Well it's the story of a paraplegic soldier who gets sent to an alien planet called Pandora in the form of an Avatar - his mind in the body of an alien, and a 10ft blue alien at that, and the war that ensues on the planet between the indigenous aliens and the human. It's described by Cameron favourite Michael Biehn (Aliens, The Abyss) as "Lawrence of Arabia in space."

What excites me about this movie though is the attention to detail. Cameron has often been at the forefront of technological advances in cinema, cast your mind back to the water "tentacle" in The Abyss, The T-1000 in Terminator 2: Judgment Day or indeed the ship in Titanic. Now he has set himself the task of creating an alien planet, alien ecosystem and the aliens themselves, called Na'vi, with their own language and culture. And he wants them photorealistic 'synthespians' able to fully convey human emotions. And word is it's amazing - according to those who have seen parts of the film, you cannot tell the difference between the real actors and the CGI creations.. And as if that wasn't enough the movie is also being made in 3D, a 3D system that James Cameron invented. However not satisfied with making a film solely as a 3D spectacle (is he ever satisfied?) he wants he film to work as a 2D experience on its own merits. A 3D film for those who can see it that way, a great science fiction adventure for those who can't.

So the filming has finished and the effects and CGI are being completed. The film, originally set for May 2009 release has been pushed back to December 2009 to give more theatres time to install the special projectors necessary for the 3D and also, I assume, to give Cameron time to ensure the finished product is exactly how he wants it to be….perfect.

Those who have seen clips of the film have been literally blown away, and these include Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson, who utilised it immediately in their Tintin feature, Steven Soderbergh, and Ridley Scott who also intends to use it in his post Robin Hood project The Forever War. It seems that James Cameron has done it again - with what is set to be a ground breaking piece of cinema.

And so we come up-to-date and the diehard fans out there, me included, are waiting for ...something, anything, from Jame4s Cameron. We have no poster as yet and no trailer.. rumblings are giving us no solid information of when we will get either and, hopefully, our first look at Pandora..

It's going to be a long eight months to December 18th...But I have no doubt it will be worth it. The burning question must be: where will James Cameron take us in the next ten years?

Let's hope they remembered to write a decent script while they were at it.....

You don't necessarily need a good script. Neither Aliens, Terminator 2, The Abyss or Titanic had good scripts.

Actually forget Titanic. Bad example.

If Sci-fi is your thing Cameron can do it well. I am really looking forward to this movie

Yeah, I know, I'm just fed up with big budget, CGI-mungous, no-brainer sci-fi flicks. Not saying Avatar will fall into that category, Cameron is no Bay or McG, but my hopes are not high, either....

Let's hope we see the "Good Cameron" (Aliens) and not the "Bad Cameron" (Titanic)

Bad Cameron.

Maybe he's only bad when he tries to do real life?

Titanic is pretty much the only flaw in his record though, even the work he done on Rambo: First Blood Part II was acceptable.

Well I thought I had better go for such an argument or my other option was to bring up Pirhana 2 and I am sure Jim wouldn't want that..
