Police say a Florida man suffered second-degree burns after he set himself ablaze creating a Halloween display that involved lighting a wooden cross on fire. According to Yvonne Martinez, a spokeswoman for the Palm Bay Police Department, neighbors witnessed 50-year-old Ron Nielson setting up display outside his home - a display that included a circle of candles with a wooden cross in the middle. When he poured gasoline on the display, he accidentally lit himself on fire. His wife was with him at the time.

Martinez said, “It started as some kind of prank, apparently, and involved a wooden cross. We don’t know if he was trying to light the cross or the candles but when he did, his clothes caught fire."

I'm going to guess cross, gasoline isn't normally used on candles.

Second point: This should be a far more common occurrence with cross-burners.

Reminds me of the Indian student in Australia who accidentally set himself on fire while trying to torch his car for an insurance scam. But he was even more creative and invoked a racist attack (as at the time there were some not infrequent attacks on Indians). He had people going for a while, but eventually a witness came forward and said she saw him pouring petrol all over his car before he and the car went up in flames.

I suspect a lot of people have NO idea how incredibly flammable petrol is. I use petrol/diesel/combinations to light fires on my block for fuel load reduction. A very small amount of petrol is violently flammable. If you were to be splashing the stuff about, and you were within 5 metres of it, you would get engulfed in the flames. VERY dangerous stuff.

So why mention Mexican at all? Someone setting light to a cross actually sounds a bit Ku Klux Klan to me.
It's hardly normal behaviour.
But if you feel like giving it a go, I would recommend old railway sleepers for the wood.
They are infused with some sort of tar-like preservative, so they should burn pretty well. I would pour on diesel and light it with a blowtorch to get it going.
