A police officer, that underwent a sex change while working for the police is suing over the treatment she received.

Yeah they could spend millions and millions of pounds educating our police force to be a bit more sensitive to one human being so that one human being can be a police officer or they can get rid of shim and pay a couple of grand... hmmmm tough choice for a trivial problem.

Don't want your feelings hurt? Don't get your dick cut off and turn yourself into a freak of nature.
People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.
But those letters are not silent.
They're just waiting their turn.

I don't even understand why these operations are allowed. These people have serious mental issues.
If some loony thought he was Napoleon, they'd lock him up, not cut a foot of their height and let him live his fantasy.
A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.

It is initially treated as a mental health issue (ie you see a shrink first), but if it can't be resolved via that manner after a length of time and causes enough distress the surgeons can get involved. If you have serious burns on your face but can still eat/breath etc is this a mental issue for wanting surgery (I think it is but surgery is still justified with public funds)
As for amputations with Body dysmorphic disorder it certainly hasn't been ruled out

Racists have serious mental issues. Pity there is no surgery that can cure them of that.

Iran leads the world in sex change operations, they use it to cure homosexuals. Thought I would add that fun fact.

Which is funny given the number of transexuals who end up homosexual into the arrival gender... There's something I don't grasp in there, but so it is.

Lesbian becomes a man, marries a gay that became a woman. I don't know what to say.

Troubled guy becomes woman and that woman only dates other women is more typical of the sightings and reports I've had.

Yep. Because that person wasn't gay as a man, just felt trapped in the wrong body. The surgery and hormones are not likely to change ones choice of sexual partner or who one finds attractive.

I wonder whether the "felt trapped in the wrong body" condition should
always be treated as a permanent, authentic state which can admit of only one possible course of action for that individual, i.e. a sex change operation of some sort.

I'm sure there is an entire spectrum of both biological and cultural influences, some people may benefit from surgery, some may not. I still feel though that our solutions are almost medieval due to our lack of technology.

Ah, but once a cop is OK with a trans person as a co-worker, wouldn't that process also lead to a more thoughtful and accepting person in general? And isn't it worth it to make our cops a bit less (pardon the expression) pigheaded?
And isn't it worth twice as much to watch the fundies fume and rage?
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."
