Russia 'regret' over attack on Dutch diplomat

Russia's foreign ministry has expressed regret after a Dutch diplomat was beaten up in Moscow.

The Dutch foreign ministry summoned Russia's ambassador to explain after the diplomat was attacked in his flat.

The incident comes amid rising tensions between the two countries.

Last week Russia protested about the arrest of one of its diplomats in the Netherlands, and the Dutch have complained about Russia's detention of a Dutch-flagged Greenpeace ship.

Ironically, 2013 was declared the "Netherlands Russia Year", with events designed to strengthen bilateral friendships, the BBC's Anna Holligan reports from The Hague.

A diplomat being attacked on the street? That's serious business, much worse than what happened to the Russian diplomat. Looks like Russia has lost whatever moral high ground it had (or thought in had) in this spat.

The incidents could be tit for tat but then again it might be tat for tit? Obviously both sides will blame the other and deny ever doing something wrong or anything.

Has Holland massed its forces along the Russian border and moved its aircraft carrier groups into position? That would show the Russians that the Dutch mean business.

I think it is time for another Anglo-Russian invasion of Holland.

I would hardly class these incidents as causing tensions between the countries.
Just normal day-to-day things that happen in any country. If a diplomat gets attacked, that's hardly surprising. They run the same risk as anybody else.
And police are going to need good evidence of diplomatic immunity, before they drop an action.
And governments still take it seriously, when diplomatic immunity is claimed, so consequences would normally still follow.
