I don't need no fucking cable, I gots me some fiber optic. Runs right up to the house. 100/50 internet, 300 TV channels, 200 music channels, and land line.

I'm working on getting O'Bammy to pay for it, cuz I'm po-ass.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

You seem to be on the "waah, he said that straya was better than merca" bandwagon. Despite the fact that I said no such thing.

It would cost about a billion dollars to get fibre optic to where I am presently situated in the mountains.

No, but satellite internet is a joke compared to the ridiculous bandwidth that lines the streets here in America.

I can't get it up at the mountain house, but they do have coax cable. Nowhere near as fast, but good enough. I don't mind pixelated porn.

Porn has had to take a back seat for a while, under dial up conditions. :sulk:

Merca must be better than Australia then. They still use tin cans and string to connect to the internet in our cities.

The point is that I live in an isolated mountain wilderness(-like) area. Do they have (non-satellite) broadband internet in the Grand Tetons? What about the mountains of Alaska? Surely as a civilised country every citizen can get high speed internet where ever they are? (I don't actually know where the Grand Tetons are or how populated they are, so if I am forced to eat crow on this, then substitute for another isolated wildernessy area).

Ignoring Alaska, Australia is roughly the same size as the US, but has only about 1/15th of the population. It's simply not economically feasible for a private company to provide telephony and internet services from scratch to the sparsely populated rural areas of Australia. That's been a job for government from the beginning (as it was for a number of similar types of services in your country when it was much less populated). The state obviously takes a nominal loss on this service, but the benefits to the nation presumably outweigh the nominal costs. That is, if we want to have a viable rural sector, we need to provide basic services to the people who are willing to do the hard job of providing our food. Telephony has been well sorted for a while now, and private companies can operate it free from the initial burden of infrastructure set up. But there's simply no way that anyone (even the government) could economically viably provide broadband internet to much of the landmass of Australia (for so few people) without using Satellite technology. The cities and coastal areas are sorted (or in the process of being sorted; although, the incoming conservatives don't like the idea of fast internet and are defunding it) for ASDL, cable and fibre. But rural Australia will for a long time be reliant on satellite broadband, much the same as people in remote locations in a lot of regions of the world are reliant on satellite phones.

Note, in Australia that a good portion of the covered areas involve "outdoor antennae" ---

Note, in the US, the colored bits compare different private companies that compete, and the colored areas are not just areas with access, but areas with access at the 4G/3G level.

I understand the part of Idaho that no one covers because it is to mountainous. But what's with the part of eastern Montana that no one covers? Is it too flat for cell phones to work or something?

ITT, Libertarians who don't understand the difference between cell phone network coverage, and broadband internet connections to homes... :fp:

Doesn't matter though, they're both taxpayer subsidized in the US.

Nobody lives there, cuz it's the rez.

The map of 3G/4G coverage of Alaska is also wildly optimistic. It looks like it covers 50 miles either side of the road system in southcentral Alaska, but it doesn't cover 1/4 of that with the "Wireline A" carrier, ACS.
I leave my home in Seward and head North, I lose cell at the first hill, then have 4 miles of 1x coverage in Moose Pass, then no coverage at all until Girdwood, then guaranteed dropped calls until I get into Anchorage, where there's 3g @ ~90-110kb/s rates.
Outside of Anc, there are very few places in the state where I can employ my NTRIP caster via 3G. My crews have to set their own base stations and broadcast their own RTCM via 2.4ghz radio.
