Australia is a federal republic like the US. Not sure exactly where the similarities begin and end, but an interesting battle is looming between the ACT and the new conservative federal government. Although, the ACT is a "territory", so is not a state exactly. But it does have senators, so has state-like representation in the parliament.
The federal government has confirmed it will challenge the ACT’s same-sex marriage laws in the High Court as soon as they are passed.
Attorney-General George Brandis described the territory laws on Thursday as “a threat” to the “well-established position” that marriage laws should be nationally consistent and were the domain of the Commonwealth

I think it's great if states are allowed their own marriage laws. Almost as good as having no marriage laws at all.

I gather that the standard position on state and federal laws in Oz goes like this:
If there is a conflict between the respective laws, federal laws trump state laws.
