Maybe Alan Sugar might bleat, if you made a joke about money-grabbing jews? I have a feeling he might.

Jews are not meant to be made fun of, except by other jews. That's only because Hitler went and killed six million of them, and if we joke about them, we might do the same. So now we are in the position where it's ok to make a stereotype joke about asians, but not jews.
Sad but true.
The two scenarios aren't the same. The target of Sugar's joke wasn't the Chinese child in the picture, it was Apple, for its exploitation.
The comparison with the holocaust would only match if you were taking the piss out of Nazis.

You could see it like that. But I don't think many people would.
It's hardly racist to make jokes about the Apple corporation. That's hardly a '' hate incident '' in my book.
It's clearly being treated as if the kid is the butt of the joke. Which matches his wording :
The businessman and star of The Apprentice posted a photo of a child apparently of Chinese origin crying.
He wrote: "The kid in the middle is upset because he was told off for leaving the production line of the iPhone 5."
I'm not saying I agree that Sugar did anything wrong. It's a ludicrous situation, to have a go at jokes of that sort.
I'm just pointing out the double standards, that jewish jokes are considered beyond the pale, but others are ok.

Your Lords sure have some funny names.
Both Jewish, I believe.
Anyway, Lord McAlpine was first. As that's my name, I can reveal that it means, '' son of a hill ''.
Weird but not hilarious.
I always thought the Mc or Mac meant "of the" without the son. Same as De, and Van, as in Del'isle and Van Whatsit.
Your lords still have stupid names. It's the Lord bit. Not so much the second bit.

But he's not making a joke at the expense of the child but the fact that the kid works for apple. I have experience in just this thing when I decided to use a picture of the concentration camps to take the piss out of The Gap's "Everyone in Stripes" campaign. The stark image and the words one could certainly say are not tasteful, that the joke is too broad, but it's hardly having a go at the chinese.

Unless one were to assume that it was saying The Chinese are inferior because they use child labour, but the butt of the joke, the conceit of it, is Apple as the villian both because it upsets the child by giving it in to trouble and for hiring child labour. To consider it racist would take some free wheeling mental contortions.

No I disagree. I think we should have Lords but they be elected by and named by the public. I'd love to see Lord Doom of the Eastern Scourge and Lord Geoffery the Oaf being actual titles they had to use in the service of their public duties. We could go nuts and have Supreme Witch of the North Winds and Cyber-Duke of the Free Republic of Chesire

I personally take it as a bit of both. But with most of the joke going against the society which allows kids to work making iphones. I wouldn't say that apple was the clear and only target.

Anyway, it's a crap joke, but it doesn't bother me at all. But the people who ARE bothered, aren't bothered by the slur on Apple, but the racial stereotype of Sugar assuming that the kid's an asian, so he must work in a sweatshop.

Generally accepted Alan Sugar is a nasty Mr Angry type always willing to target the vulnerable and this would have informed the polices decision to call it a hate incident. Doubt it is anything at all to do with the Jewish side....he is a nasty finger wagging sort before all other things. :coffee:

It is a bit odd that girls get called Mac as well. But I suppose back in the old days, girls didn't count as family members, more like higher-status dogs.
I would like to pass a law that anybody can be a lord, or a sir, just by adopting it. And abolish the House of Lords, obviously.
Maybe we could have a house of tv celebrities, as they are more relevant to today's society.

And have the highest rated celebrity as head of state. People could vote every day on their mobile phones for their top ten celebrities, and number one gets to live at the palace, till they are voted off.

No one posted the Tweet yet?

I think Rainbow's friends call this African Sushi.
Bit irresponsible for the BBC to publish the article without the context of the picture. Lord Sugar should have a word with his solicitor about this :{D

A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.

Alan Sugar obviously missed the fact that they are all the same kid.
Well, these Asians probably all look alike to him.

Making racists jokes isn't a crime anyway, only jokes that incite racial hatred and can think how that could incite anyone to hate anything bar child labour

The kids are Chinese. Dad dresses them up like that to stay cool. DM had an article on it a few months back.
