There's really only one way forward here. Just fund the fucking thing and let the chips fall where they will. If it works then I'll admit the error of my ways, turn in my guns, replace all my incandescent bulbs with CFCs and become a vegan. If it doesn't, and it turns out to be the most unworkable and expensive boondoggle in U.S. history (which is my belief) then the opposition agrees to scrap it, require all citizens to own a gun, build more coal plants and feed the vegans to the resurgent polar bear population.

The problem with that is that if the latter happens, then the solution proposed will be: "Hey, the Republicans forced us into this half measure. What we should have done is single payer health care and complete nationalization of our healthcare. Only then will the true benefits of government run healthcare be realized."

I'm getting the impression that this shutting down of the memorials is a way for the Administration to try to bring out more ire against the 'publicans. In the last gubmint shutdown, in 1995-6, the memorials and parks did not close.

I don't get what the publicans think they are gaining here, though. Maybe they feel they have no choice. They are being blamed. Most people think it's the 'publicans' fault.

I read that the gubmint shut down the parking lot at Mt. Vernon. Mt. Vernon is privately owned, so they can't shut that down. But they barricaded the parking lots so that tour buses and cars can't park there. LOL.

The National Park Service erected barricades to shut down parking lots surrounding Mount Vernon despite the fact that the tourist destination is privately owned, another example of how the feds are deliberately worsening the government shut down.
However, a dispute began when the National Park Service began putting up barricades to block off the facility’s car park, blockading the entrance as well as a spot where tour buses turn around.

The parking lots are co-owned by Mount Vernon and the NPS, but require no immediate maintenance at all, meaning the decision to close them down was completely unnecessary.

Surely in Seth-world all these parks/memorials and whatnot should be forcibly seized by red-blooded, patriotic, entrepreneurial, pioneering types; claimed as private property for the purposes of turning a profit; and defended with assault-rifle against all comers (be they WWII vets or whatever).
