ROME, Maine (AP) — A Livermore Falls man wearing a ski mask and brass knuckles was shot to death during an attempted home invasion, state police said Monday.

Christopher Dennison, 44, was shot after a brief altercation with the homeowner Saturday night in a mobile home on Foss Hill Lane, said Steve McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

Richard Duffy, 48, and his teenage son were not hurt, who’d been watching TV, were not hurt, McCausland said. An autopsy showed Dennison died from multiple gunshot wounds.

No charges were filed against Duffy. And his lawyer told the Kennebec Journal that the homeowner was defending himself.

“We don’t have all the facts in yet, but from all appearances, this looks like straight-up, self-defense,” Tom Ferris said. “It was a home invasion. My client was just defending himself and his family.”

Police did not release details of the confrontation, which is at the center of their ongoing investigation. The case will also be reviewed by the Maine attorney general’s office.

There was a second man in the car when Dennison broke down the door to Duffy’s home, but that man fled after hearing gunshots, McCausland said. Police questioned him but filed no charges.

Well, I don't know about that.

If you think carefully about what it would be like in that circumstance....imagine if you will that you live in a small home with your family. By surprise, at night, you realize someone is breaking into your house. You don't know what they want. You don't know why. They come in, however, and attack your family, including wife and kids. Do you honestly think there are a lot of civilians who can take a gun and pinpoint a kneecap? It's hard to even hit someone with a handgun.

There is just too much at stake and too much commotion and things move too fast in these circumstances for a person to bend over backwards for the intruder. And, why place such burdens on the innocent? The innocent person, minding their own business in their own home, is going to be tasked with making sure they don't overreach against an intruder? That doesn't sound equitable at all.

Obviously you know nothing about self-defense law in the states, which vary.

Unless you live in a state with "Stand Your Ground" or "Castle Doctrine" laws, which prohibit the aggressor from suing the defender after getting shot.

In states WITHOUT those laws, it's actually better to kill, and not just wound, the person you're defending yourself from, because dead people can't sue you.

You should really familiarize yourself with, you know, ACTUAL FACTS, before you pass judgement like an ethnocentric ass.

Exactly.

There's someone around here who likes to say how easy it is to shoot a gun, like a monkey could do it.

I'd like to see how well they operate a firearm, under duress, when you have seconds to react and keep someone from killing you.

Something tells me they'd change their mind on how "easy" it is to operate a firearm after such an experience.

Because that sort of attitude advantages the criminal and disadvantages the victim. Nobody said it's easy to use a firearm in self-defense. Nobody said it's certain protection against victimization, injury or death. Nobody said it's always the right thing to do in every case. But it's better to be prepared to take the shot and decide not to do so than to need to, have a shot, and not have the proper tool.

What's atrocious about shooting someone who is attempting to beat your face in and brains out with a pair of brass knuckles? You ever seen someone after they've been worked over with them? I have. It's not pretty at all, and it very frequently causes permanent physical disfigurement, blindness, brain damage and death, the imminent threat of which all justify the use of deadly physical force.

You'd have the criminal beat the victim's brains and teeth out, put him in a coma, turn him into Quasimodo by fracturing all the bones in his face, make him unable to eat solid food for months by shattering his jaw and require the victim to suffer this attack on the imbecilic notion that the criminal ought to get a "fair trial?"
