UKIP's Godfrey Bloom under fire over 'demeaning' joke

A UKIP politician is facing calls to consider his future after referring to a group of women as "sluts".

Godfrey Bloom used the word while addressing a "women in politics" event at the party's conference.

After being challenged about the comments, he said they had been a joke and that members of the audience had laughed.

UKIP's Diane James said the language was "unacceptable" while party leader Nigel Farage said it was inappropriate.

Mr Bloom was later filmed hitting a Channel 4 News reporter over the head with a party leaflet.

In a fringe meeting at the party's annual conference in London, the Yorkshire and Humber MEP made reference to previous comments he had made about women not cleaning behind the fridge.

When the women at the meeting said they had never cleaned behind their fridges, he said: "This place is full of sluts."

No, of course not. But the severity and lifelong effects are much worse for females. And it's happening today, not a hundred years ago.

Not that I'm a supporter of male circumcision, I've always argued that it should be banned.
I might be wrong, female circumcision might be minor, but I've read some pretty horrible stories about what they do to girls bits, and the complications it causes at the time, etc etc.

My brother is circumcised, I'm not, but I've never heard him say a word complaining about it's effects. He was done for medical reasons, not religious.

I don't think you can compare the two though, in severity, although I'm certainly no expert. But I do think she has a point, that if what they were doing to boys was comparable, it would have been stopped years ago.

I say ban the lot, and make it a serious offence, and make a serious attempt to stamp it out. But, as that isn't going to happen any time soon, stamp out the worst practices now, which is any kind of female circumcision.

However you make a good point, you've heard some pretty horrible stories thus it must be bad, but you don't hear horrible stories about MGM so that must not be as bad. Well I'm sure the mothers and sisters who encourage and often perform FGM on their daughters might also come up with "oh it never did me any harm" rationalisations.

I've heard some horror stories too about MGM and despite what you might think, castration is not archaic though it is also a small scale problem. So my issue with her is either that she doesn't know what the fuck she is talking about or more she subscribes to the commonly sexist bias in which boys and men's suffering is all but invisible. I also think she is talking shit if she thinks that the West would have stamped out ritual castration in primitive cultures if it happened to boys. It didn't, it doesn't.

I do think you can compare the two. They are both culturally normalised brutality against children. The scale of them is different as are the perceived "benefits" but in most cases they are involuntary mutilation of children.

Involuntary genital mutilation on children is a monstrosity no matter what shit rationalistions people might come up with to perpetuate it. It is not a gender issue, her words exposed her stupidity and ignorance on the matter. Also I do agree with you, if we can stop this trivial (in the sense it is not commonplace) brutality first, then we might have a better chance of learning how to stop it entirely.

I agree she certainly should have included male circumcision in her argument, and leaving it out made it wide open to criticism, which is a shame. She could have done a much better job, by including it, and I can't imagine why she didn't.

It did strike me as silly, even though I strongly agree about female circumcision. She just did a very bad job. I can't imagine why. But because I hate the thought of any kind of genital mutilation, including the widespread male circumcision, I naturally support any effort to attack the practice, even if it's not very well done.

On the basis that anything is better than nothing.

Y'know I wouldn't even have had a problem with it if she had specifically talked about FGM. My issue is that her whole "we would stop it it was boys willies" shows a level of ignorance and bias which was completely unnecessary and defines forced ritual genital mutilation of children as a gender issue when it doesn't have to be. It's unsound thinking and a deeply stupid fucking thing to say especially when you are trying to call attention to a serious issue.

The only point I was trying to make was that ignorant gender bias in our political sphere is not the province of fringe wankers from UKIP.
