quote of the day
I would like to reiterate one point: it is not surprising that a guy in the US would decide that Jesus Christ was the main dude. When I briefly returned to religion back in college (because my life was falling apart and also to chase this cute Christian boy) I, too, decided it had to be Jesus Christ speaking to my soul. It would be very surprising, even evidence worth researching, if either of us had heard from gods we had zero previous knowledge of, like Durga, Shango or Ahura Mazda.

Talking to a theist today. Not fundie, I suspect a Catholic:

You got lost in numbers. There are only a few base pairs in dna, so the two letter code will never give those options.

You seem to want there to be emergent properties and awesomeness, reductionism is evil. It makes it all "just molecules."

Enjoy your babies, ice cream and feelings. Even if it is just molecules. ||grin||

Theists come and make their claims and I respond to their "if that is all there is" objections with: yes, that is all there is. Why do you people want more and more? Take what you get and make the most of it.

I would not waste my life on the internet, but I happen to be at work. I am distilling a liter of solvent and sitting on a lab stool as we speak.

Ever find people that, once they find you are an atheist, distrust everything you say? It could be lawn care, kindergarten, high school. Everything you say now is an attack on religion.

Like being gay.

Fundie accused us atheists of believing in nothing. We pointed out that since he believes in a nonexistent god, he also believes in a nothing. So it's the same! Where's the problem?

He didn't respond.

catch of the day
"And now a word from SCOTUS: http://www.salon.com/2013/10/07/scalia_ ... the_devil/ "

He didn't just say he believed in the devil (because he believes all Catholic doctrine without question), but that he has a whole framework to explain the apparent lack of obvious activity by this being. The Devil does a better job of convincing us that God doesn't exist, by hiding the evidence that he (the Devil) exists. Wow, what a brilliant plan -- the Devil has outsmarted God!

From that link:

Interviewer: "...what do you think of [the Pope's] recent comments, that the church ought to focus ... more on helping the poor?" Scalia: "I think he’s absolutely right. I think the church ought to be more evangelistic."

FFS!
