I'm thinking Obama will back down on Syria

Post by Tyrannical » Thu Sep 05, 2013 11:07 am

I'm thinking Obama will back down on Syria.

Failure to pass in the UK I think was just the first sign how unpopular getting into another war is. Looking at the Daily Mail comments it looks like a lot of people like Assad more than the rebels. Lots blame the rebels for the gas attack too.

I don't think it will pass the US House, though it probably will in the Senate. Action in Syria seems to be supported by only a small minority of the people too.

But all those missiles! At least 40! It will make some senator and congressman happy. They have to make 409 more missiles in their district.

I think nothing much will happen, except that the Syrians will be left to get on with it, and a whole lot of innocent ones will die. Remember Sabra and Chatila? Remember Bosnia? Remember lots of such places down the years? Syria is going to be added to the list.

We're still a pretty uncivilised species.

I think it's already on the list. We just don't yet know how much worse it's going to get, of for how much longer.

I agree that we have some way to go before we can consider ourselves to be civilized at the collective level.

The Post has contacted 371 of the 435 members of the House. Of those contacted, 204 representatives are against authorization or leaning against it. That compares to 24 members in favor and 143 members who are undecided, and 48 of the undecided representatives are Republicans.

Of the undecided members, the Post reports, many of them have yet to receive the administration’s intelligence briefing on the sarin gas attack in Syria. About 25 percent of those opposed to the authorization are Democrats, which means the resistance to the proposal is clearly bipartisan.

Congress will vote it down, IMO, and Obama cannot proceed without their approval (see constitution of U.S.).

Cruise missile attacks would be a major mistake as Syria does have the tech to shoot them down (Russia sold it to them years ago) and the Russian warships in the region have the capability to relay telemetry data for any U.S. launched missiles to the Syrian defense forces. It would allow Syria to pull down Uncle Sam's pants and show his panties to the world.

Obama could have gotten away with launching a few missiles at Syria if he didn't ask Congress. But since he is now asking Congress and Congress won't say yes, that puts him in a difficult position. Though keep in mind that failure to say yes is not the same as if both houses passed a resolution saying no.
