Maybe the chaos of a high mortality pandemic would produce a prettier outcome but the next few decades are unlikely to be pretty for any. Malthus anyone?

The world is not overpopulated, although, due to insufficient economic development we have some localised overpopulation.

The global population may continue to grow. However, equally likely are the predictions that the global poulation will peak and drop back as economic development in the "third world" begins to reduce the number their children born to families.
All a matter of perspective. Overlooked diminishing feedbacks within the biosphere may say it is? :coffee:

Or they might not. :coffee:

Or they might indicate a pressing need to adjust how we farm and how we organise our urban environments.

Or it might indicate a pressing need to develop effective geoengineering technologies.

I guess it is possible that isn't a mountain coming up. I can understand why people, even bright people, look on the bright-side given the likely reality of the next few years/decades.

The bright side is every bit as possible, and every bit as unforeseeable as your doom laden predictions.

Doom predictors have been with humans right through our history. They are like the proverbial stopped clock - right twice a day, but not due to the efficacy of their prescience.

A squadron of Typhoons has been sent to RAF Akritiri and a French air-defence destroyer to the eastern med. Russia has "rotated" a couple of warships to the area too. Good job Ed Milliband has muffled the war drums by insisting parliament gets a proper debate based on a completed UN weapons inspection.

In theory, parliament could vote against UK military action. That would be interesting....

RAF Akritiri is in range of Syrian Scuds. Would they dare attack it in retaliation for US/UK air strikes? We would have to respond to an attack on UK sovereign territory.....

Syria promising kamikaze attacks against US carriers. Can't see that going well.

Ah yes, a technique which sank a total of 0 Essex class carriers in WW2 is bound to work on the Nimitz and the Truman, lol. :nervous:

The Syrians do have some supersonic Russian anti-ship missiles but I presume western vessels will stay well out of range.
