Cheetahs are slow.

Post by mistermack » Tue Aug 27, 2013 11:55 pm

I've noticed this on many youtube nature videos.
Cheetahs are amazing. They can CHASE things at over 100 kph. But they are useless at running AWAY from danger.

If you look at this video, the lion is a big heavy male. The cheetahs could, if they had the sense, easily outrun the lion.
But it seems that they can't. They need that trigger, of a fleeing gazelle, to provoke them to full speed.
They don't seem to have the flight response necessary to escape the lion.

I've seen a lot of examples of this, so it's not that these cheetahs were sick, or unique.
It's hard to explain, from an evolutionary point of view.

While there is a market for shit, there will be assholes to supply it.

That cheetah was injured and the other one was distracted by pussy.

Normally, a cheetah can outrun and outlast a lion.

Here's another example. It's weird. A lion can virtually never catch a Thomson's Gazelle, they are too fast and too aware.
But they can catch and kill Cheetahs, which prey on the Gazelles.
Prey animals have that instinct of keeping predators at a safe distance, and they flee at full speed. The cheetahs just don't seem to have it.

Okay, I'll watch it, but the first video was a very poor example.

Here's another example, and the one at the end of the video is really the best example.
The cheetah just doesn't seem to have the right instincts to escape. It could easily run almost twice as fast as the lion :

What's your beef with cheetahs, Mistermack? Did a cheetah run off with your wife or something?

Cheetahs are getting lazier nowadays. I don't blame 'em though. Their parenting is a bit spotty. :what?:

For a hundred yards or so, yes. Then it would be exhausted. The lion would still get it, perhaps with more certainty.
