So.... Seen Any Good Movies Lately?
Re: So.... Seen Any Good Movies Lately?
The most recent film that I saw that really lingers in the memory was Monster's Ball, with Billy Bob Thornton and Halle Berry. Relentlessly bleak and despairing (and therefore right up my street
) but with a hopeful ending. Difficult viewing, but a great film.

None of these are particularly "new," but I think they would entertain you:
- Pan's Labyrinth (Creepy fairy tale set during the Spanish Civil War.)
- Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (My fave; about a couple who have their relationship erased from their memories. Very touching. Jim Carey's best performance yet. Fell in love with Kate Winslet because of this flick.)
- Alexander Revisited (Oliver Stone's vision of the life of Alexander "The Great." Give it a chance. I recently watched it over the course of 2 days, one half each day, and loved it. The "Revisited" cut is much more coherent than the Theatrical release.)
- Club Paradise (A really funny 80s flick back when Robin Williams was still funny. A Chicago fireman has a bad accident on the job and buys a hotel resort in the Caribbean with the insurance settlement money. Hilarity ensues. Filled with cool reggae tunes.)
- Big Trouble in Little China (Kurt Russel, Kim Cattrall. An All-American trucker gets dragged into a centuries-old mystical battle in Chinatown, San Francisco. Good laughs and fun 80s effects.)
- Boogie Nights (The story of a young man's adventures in the Californian pornography industry of the 1970s and 1980s. Brilliant!)
- Starship Troopers (Bloody farce lampooning fascism in a sci-fi setting.)
- Children of Men (In 2027, in a chaotic world in which humans can no longer procreate, a former activist agrees to help transport a miraculously pregnant woman to a sanctuary at sea, where her child's birth may help scientists save the future of humankind.)
- Donnie Darko (A troubled teenager is plagued by visions of a large bunny rabbit that manipulates him to commit a series of crimes, after narrowly escaping a bizarre accident. Cult classic.)

Just finished watching it. Great ending. No studio in Hollywood would have the balls to do anything similar these days.Bella Fortuna wrote:"Fugitive" is a great film - especially the ending scene... quite haunting.

Next one to watch is Peter Sellars' hippie comedy "I love you Alice B Toklas." I saw this about 25 years ago on TV and mentioned it to my mate the other night - lo and behold, he had a copy!
I bet it's a lot crapper than i remember but it's still a total period piece.

I love that film. It's like a fairytale for adults. It tricks you into feeling like you're watching a kids' film, but them throws in some graphic violence too.Clinton Huxley wrote:Watched Pan's Labyrinth again on Friday night. Awesomeness ensued.

One of my top ten films. And it has a story! (Take note, Michael Bay, McG, etc etc etc).

Also, you can tell it's good when you completely forget it's subtitled and remember it in English.Clinton Huxley wrote:"I have gutted more than one pig..."Pappa wrote:I love that film. I have only seen Pan once and felt disappointed, perhaps I should rewatch?

I diagnose Michael Bay's disease - a common affliction whereby the lack of an explosion every 27 seconds leads to movie disillusionment....Elessarina wrote:I have only seen Pan once and felt disappointed, perhaps I should rewatch?
But then, I blame Michael Bay for pretty much everything.

I'm totally bewildered as to how you lot get time to watch films...can't remember the last one I watched. I think my daughter has doomed me to take her to the new Harry Potter, though. ( I was hoping she'd grown out of them by now)
