The recent terrorist threats -- real or bogus?

Post by Coito ergo sum » Tue Aug 06, 2013 3:15 pm

President Obama continues to say nothing to a jittery nation about what some who have been briefed on the danger are describing as the worst terrorist threat since 9/11, declining to either offer reassurance or an explanation of the peril the nation faces.

Certainly, the president does not want to take questions about a threat he had minimized during the 2012 campaign. But what’s striking is that he has not addressed the nation in a formal manner on the potential for a major attack.

I don't get these discussions. There's always a threat.

Is there an election coming up? Pollies love to ramp up the terror threat leading up to elections.

If you buy a lottery ticket on Friday evening for the draw on Saturday evening, you have a higher chance of being dead by the time the draw takes place than you have of winning the jackpot.
The terrorist threat - while real - is in the same ballpark.
But sheep are easier to herd than cats, and they want to distract people from their own government spying on them.

What was the threat level color?
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

Oh yes, I have no illusions about the risks of me personally being hurt in an attack.

But, it's also true that you don't have to kill me to hurt the US. I'm a nobody.

Yes, but if they're ramping up public anxiety, there must be some civil or human right they're trying to suppress, or some current government misbehaviour they're trying to gloss over.

Oh, wait...

Well, something seems to be brewing around Yemen, or at least states other than the US have seen fit to ramp up the safety measures and close their offices.

Then again, it's not like the CIA was that reliable, or it were the first time the US cried wolf without a discernible canine in sight, or range, and they have been known to fire at buystanders and call them terrorists afterward.
